As taught by LRE, engage CDL as soon as you leave tar for any reasonable distance.

Look, if I have to drive a stretch of gravel 100m long on a tar road, then I don't bother, but anything longer, then definitely engage CDL. --

Thanks all for the great advice - I'm very new to off roading g so it's a steep learning curve from what I am used to. Especially the heat of moment.

I think my biggest fault was the route I took on softer ground when I should have kept struggling on track - still I needed this information but have been as scary.

Will get everything properly I place this weekend and have a second go Smile

Back to the original problem of difficulty selecting low/diff lock etc, a lot of people fail to select this enough and the linkages can seize up then over forcing the selector will shear off the linkage. It is worth selecting low/diff lock once every few weeks moving a meter or so in a STRAIGHT line just to keep everything moving, also when washing down the vehicle make sure you get right under and remove the mud from all of the linkages as they are all external on the r/h/s of the gearbox/tbox. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

I'm with Naks on this one. I've been on a number of Land Rover driving courses, my first one being in 1968 and the latest one some four months ago. Whether you are driving a series with yellow and red knobs or a Defender or a RRFF with Terrain Response 2, the instruction is always the same - if you are heading off the hard stuff engage LR and CDL, don't wait until you're in the sticky stuff. Defender 90XS SW

This is where differing levels of experience can lead to an argument agreeing over the same salient point.

As correctly said and as can be found on the fuse box cover of many an older 90 etc the blurb on using the central differential lock when traction is likely to be lost.
As Naks pointed out and i Will back him up when I am doing basic tuition or just purely a Stag do i will just say that when you get off tarmac / Concrete then the diff lock is to be used. The windup caused will be negligible in the off-road situation and there will be some mud soon to unwind things.
It is only when the tuition becomes more advanced that the whole concept of engaging the CDL when it is needed, It takes a little time to get adept enough to read the terrain ahead and to plan when the CDL is needed.
This level of thinking is beyond most Novices to off road driving who are having enough of a time steering correctly, Keeping their left foot off the clutch and maintaining correct speed. Asking them to look ahead 100 yards to look at the terrain and ask themselves is ditch enough to cross axle me, do those witness marks mean enough drag to require the extra traction or is that enough of a slope to require more grip?
There is a huge wealth of talent on here who can drive competently off-road and who will spend the day off tarmac and will adjust the gears as needed and will dip in and out of the CDL when required but for those who don't have that experience yet then stick with the basics and leave the 'experts' to argue to the 'nth' degree what technique should be applied when. Only through trying it will you build up a knowledge and understanding of how your land rover behaves and when you can refine the basic off-road driving techniques the more confident you become.

Happy Driving.

As Devon Rover says, once you have a bit of experience you'll be knocking it in and out of diff lock as required.
With low box I always select it as soon as I venture off the tarmac, better to have 5 usable gears than 2 😊

Blackwolf, there will be a lot of people on here that have no idea what you're talking about, lots too young to have enjoyed the series experience. I miss mine a lot, but have heard it might be up for sale in the near future, so pushing the yellow knob and pulling red one might be a thing I'm doing in the future - I hope.

There was something very satisfying about pushing that yellow knob down to engage fwd and the joy in moving the red knob back and forth to disengage the yellow knob, not to mention having to remember whether your free wheeling hubs were engaged or not. The joys of series Land Rovers compared to Terrain Response and Hill Descent Control et al.

This worked perfectly - stationary. Depress clutch, into neutral, release clutch, depress clutch, into low, release.

Did it on the driveway and went forward and backwards no problem.

So seems I could lock the diff too.

How do I do that?

I have given it a wiggle but don't want to force anything.

Or even pulling on the bog chain (as I used to call it) to lock up the freewheel on the very early 80's to get 4wd in low range reverse Very Happy Happy days.
