In my opinion, as above, Skytag tracker, we have available at a special price to forum members (see the FCX section of the forum) then additionally I would move the alarm sounder and add an additional earth internally from the battery to the seat box.

There are lots of threads on security do a bit of searching Thumbs Up

would be a great help!

G'Day mate,

driving it first for a while is really good advice - you will probably find that sticking lipstick on it can wait and you probably will go for the mods which sort out all the quirks and potential issues which the manufacturer has overlooked, especially things like the clutch, certain gearbox issues and rust protection.

Here are a few standard mods our company always considered for new Defenders for engineers in the field:-

1- Huper Optik Ceramic film on all glass as follows:-

a. Huper Klar 85 for front windscreen, driver's seat windows and front passenger seat window.
b. Huper Ceramic 30 or 35 or 70 depending on road traffic authorities requirements for rest of windows, rear windscreen and sunroof (if any). - could do 15%
c. Huper Reflektor 20 for optional 6" antiglare strip on front windscreen.

Windshield Hόper Ceramic 70 (49%) or Huper Optik Selekt Sech 59% (54%)
Front side windows = 35% select Drei (54%)

8" strip above windshield Huper ceramic 05 (75%) Huper Reflektor 20 may also be used

This mod has saved more than just the interior, it has saved millions in expensive mining and geological equipment which is sensitive to sun damage and it is the most amazing window tint ever manufactured, hands down and without fear of contradiction.

2- Full Dinitrol or similar rust treatment as early as possible - try not to delay with this one - there are fabulous contributions from other D2 members on rust proofing - definitely more important than any lipstick!

3- Two new Optima batteries (one yellow top and one red top)

4- Re-wire headlights to separate relays, check earth contacts all through the vehicle - have a sparky check the vehicle for "leakage" - and install Ctek 250S dual battery charger or similar - also X-Eng winch grade split charge system

5- Check and either replace or at least secure delivery of one alternative to OEM Puma clutch - you will experience clutch problems sooner or later.

6- Check all lubricants, and not by the dealer either, be there, personally, and make certain every functional item on that vehicle is properly oiled, greased, lubricated or otherwise serviced by the required fluids - various mods might become obvious at this stage. We have seen brand new deliveries with missing lubricants leaving very important little bits and pieces as dry as a lizard's tit.

7- New suspension: OE springs (we mostly use red/red on rear and Disco rears on the front with rubber isolators); decent quality gas shocks (either Monroe Gas Magnums, Adventure 4Χ4 or De Carbons) - optional - roll bar

8- Provent 200 filtration system - you will be amazed how these things make a difference after 50k - 100k and you will be pleased you bothered when your Landy was still new.

9- Proper coolant alarm

10- JW Speaker headlights and consider LED conversion, if only to spare the dodgy electrical system.

11- Super Pro bushes

12- Fit an adjustable ball joint to the A frame

13- Check the load leveler

Other frequent mods on our fleet:-

Raptor dash console to hold stereo and a bank of 12-volt cigarette lighter sockets and USB sockets
X-Eng security items: pedal box lock, gear stick lock, ignition barrel shield
Check front drive shafts and CVs – upgrade / replace if needed
Heavy-duty drive flanges
Super Pro bushes
Rear bumperettes
Bikini winch mount and Goldfish TDS winch

The list could go on forever, but the point is that mods should start with taking care of the Landy's mechanical "health" - Once you are satisfied that your Puma's mechanical functions are all good, then you can dress her up in all the bling and lipstick money can buy.

Do it the other way round and your blingy shiny Defender could embarrass you on the side of the road a few times and leave your wallet very much worse off for wear.

Do NOT rely on the manufacturer to fix everything if the vehicle does have flaws - though they are a great company, JLR have been known to falter on occasion.

We have always found that prevention of mechanical mishap is always the best policy for any Defender.

Good luck and enjoy your new vehicle mate! ****CENSORED****

Rustproofing whilst it's clean and easy to do, then just drive it Smile
You'll soon find out whether you need or want to change anything.

Headlight relay is well worth doing, it's not expensive, massively improves performance and removes a known weak spot. I've added some sound deadening, cargo rails, changed the roof from grey back to the original white, put a second battery in for camping, fold down table on the rear door to replace the broken plastic thing and fitted a tracker.

The most important thing to do, however, is buy some diesel for it and go and explore!
http://www.trailwise.org.uk/ will show you lanes that are open and and restrictions. If you join GLASS or another group then you can search a wider area on the trailwise map. Bing maps will give you OS maps of the whole country, and if you've got a smartphone then for £10 Backcountry Navigator will give you them for offline access too.

Once you've got a Defender people seem to like asking for a tow, so find out safe ways of doing that if you don't already know, and if you're comfortable doing so then get a decent rope.

Drive it! Thumbs Up

Thanks for that Matt Wink

Should have said "or similar" but then, the longer you own one the more likely you are to become as flawed as one, and I am sure we have both owned them long enough to admit it!

Good on ya Matt!!
