Just booked flights to New York in April so that I can propose to my girlfriend of 9 years (hopefully she'll say yes )
Any suggestions for places to visit, we are staying on Broadway, that are a bit different (we've been previously a few years ago and visited the usual suspects, Empire State, Ground Zero, Statue of Liberty etc. already) Thank you |

The Met (Metropolitan Museum of Art), Central Park, go jogging early morning with your girlfriend there around The Reservoir like the real New Yorkers do, ask your hotel if you can rent a couple of bikes for early sunday morning and go biking through and around Central Park, again like the New Yorkers do.
Also worth these days is the Meat Packing District which is booming, then the MOMA in Mid Town, and the Guggenheim museum. And I recommend to reserve dinner one evening at Balthazar in Spring Street, which is the heart of Soho, another popular district. Balthazar is a french brasserie, always bustling (so not your typical face to face candle light dinner), but a really impressive place. They take reservations one month ahead I think, check their website. Now, if you want a great place for a high quality romantic breakfast (or even better sunday brunch), I can recommend Sarabeth's East on Madison and 92nd. That is also a very nice area of town to discover, the upper East side where the white money lives. Book a show ahead of time, Mamma Mia for instance, I can assure you that it's a spectacular experience. Eric P.S. by the way, I know someone who proposed on top of the Empire State Building and she said yes. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

The High Line - a disused railway above street level that has been turned into a garden and walkway with lots of arty stuff going on.
Top of the rock - Rockefeller centre - views of the Empire State rather than from it. Also some odd art/science installations at the top. |

Matt
if you can alter your tickets extend your stay in the US and visit Washington and Boston both reasonably close to New York by train and both fantastic cities and the train journey between them is great, I also always contact the hotels in advance specifying why I am visiting (in your case a proposal) and quite often this results in an upgrade or some champers or something FOC Good luck DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

That's great news Matt
Another vote for the Highline; it's simply brilliant. I'd suggest doing a load of research on great restaurants that will cater to your pallet. I had the best steak ever in NYC and the restaurant was simply amazing (sadly can't recall the name now as it was years ago!). Guggenheim, The Met, IPC (International Centre of Photography), Central Park and maybe a day or two of shopping will be a great mixture. Also, the Ground Zero museum may be interesting and then you can nip into the Hilton just by it for dinner. I've not been but a friend who lived there for 20 plus years really recommends Coney Island. Have fun |

Can recommend a short flight (small plane) to Niagra Falls from NYC, quite spectacular if frozen, trip over to the Canadian side, as well as a visit to Niagra on the lake town/village. A number of operators run these quite good prices, ideal for a special occasion, good luck Jumped ship to reliability - Mitsubishi L200

Hi Matt
Would also recommend the Metropolitan Museum and the Guggenheim museum for a bit of culture and most of ericvv suggestion appear spot on. For lunch take a look at the Boathouse restaurant in central park and dinner at the River Cafe restaurant in Brooklyn, which has a great view of Manhattan at night. Good luck. Def90 |

New York?....Simply the most amazing City I've been to.
I kept expecting to see Bruce Willis come around the corner. You could fill this Forum with suggestions of things to do,....I'm sure you'll work it out, and I've no doubt your girlfriend will say yes! Pickles. |

A boat trip around Manhattan - down the Hudson and up the East river. We went with Citysights as part of a package with the open top bus tour.
If you haven't been there already don't forget Grand Central station - a beautiful building with a fascinating history. And I think the One world trade visitor centre is now open. Enjoy the trip |

I've been trying to find what the steakhouse was called; memory's a bit sketchy as it was many years ago, but I'm pretty sure it was one of these two:

Take her the grand central station, in one corner they have the whispering arch..
That would be a fun way to propose to her http://www.sonicwonders.org/whispering-wal...l-station/ |

.. or if she liked the movie 'When Harry met Sally' you could propose in Katz's Deli. Just tell her to keep the noise down
