Puma 2.2 goes into limp mode
quick update: the pipe going into the intercooler, passenger side,(short pipe that dips into cooler) has a small amount of oil that that leaves that end. I can see a wet spot on the chassis. COULD THIS BE THE AIR LEAK?

Hello everyone.

I'm currently in Namibia and have been driving on gravel roads for most part. Temperature above 30 degrees.
A few days ago the engine warning light came on and speed dropped to max 80kmh (limp mode?). I was doing 100kmh+ when it happened. I stopped, switched off the car and then on again. Power was back but light still on. It went into limp mode again later.

Went to the LR "dealer" in Walvis Bay as it is closest (300km drive!) they plugged it in and fiddled with hoses as the tend to split or something like that. No noises. No smoke. They checked the pipes for leaks but couldn't find anything.

I drove back and about 180km later it went into limp again. And 50km afterwards again. (It was quite hot).

I suspect a faulty/dirty MAF or MAP sensor. Everything on the car is standard. How can I rule out a faulty MAF sensor? Should I unplug it and go for a long drive?
46000km on the clock. Full service at 40000km recently.

Thank you for any advice!

Wales 2012 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 SW Alpine White
Hi
Had the same thing happen to me about 2 years ago, 35 000 kms.
The stealer in Maun could not find the issue, drove to Jo'burg (23 hours in limp mode Big Cry ) and they too could not find the issue. They replaced some sensors. Continued on to Knysna where all was good for only 1 week. The chaps in George were the most helpful and after having the vehicle for 3 days managed to find the problem.
There was a microscopic crack in one of the high pressure hoses, which was causing the sensor to get a below pressure reading, and forcing the limp mode to activate.
I'd suggest when next you are near a workshop, get them to check the hoses.
Hope this helps...

Same Issues
Just had the same issues.

This is how it got sorted.
1: replaced MAF sensor (no change).
2: checked all hoses rhs of bonnet for cracks, splits or loose (no issues).
3: cracked Intercooler (on one of the welds) replaced, job sorted.

Hope the above helps?

Thank you WYL and bushpig. I was SO hoping it was just a sensor. Keeping my hopes up! But will definitely check the rest!

Hi Heinz, I was having the same issue just a few days before. Mine's a 2.2, too.
Workshop identified loose sensor on bank 1. Sensor appeared in fault codes.
Workshop said that loose DPF sensors are well known. Good luck! Juka

Hello Kheinz & BushPig- new to the site here, but you guys look like prime suspects for my questions!
Me and the Missus are planning a move to the Walvis Bay area early next year- gonna take a condo at Langstrand it seems, and will be staying/playing for about a year or so. Tours into Botswana, Zambia, S Africa, along with excursions to the Namib Northwest. I've been looking at available used LRs for sale - got my eye on : 1.) 2012 Defender 2.2 w 88,000km (Windhoek), 2.) 2010 Disco 4 TDS w 82,000km (W Bay). Both are similar in price; of course the Disco is more comfy (cruise control option is VERY attractive!), but I did an extensive tour in 2011 w one of Asco's Defenders, and I've got to admit I'm a glutton for punishment.
Could you please give me your insights on the draw-backs of each? Which will be liable to give me the least amount of grief? The 2011 I drove (pics here) was a TDi. I've heard pros/cons on the various Defender drive trains; the electronics issues scare the hell out of me for a Namibia vehicle. Can the Disco get me most anyplace I've listed above (although I prefer the traditional LR profile)?
We're both truly excited to be coming your way. Thanks in advance- olecap
