Headlights - normal configuration?

It's been a while since I've had a 'normal' headlight configuration after adding a Landreiziger loom upgrade to my headlights to help them, after fitting the loom there is no sidelight only option.

So, after I've done the 'dim dip' mod today to put it back to sidelights on the first click of the stalk, then headlights on the second, while driving I switched between headlights and main beam several times and noticed a change. When I use the flash option the headlights and the main beam come on, which is brighter than just the main beam (if that makes sense?) I can't remember if this is how it was previously, seems odd that 'flash' uses both the headlight and main beam, and main beam is less powerful on it's own. The main beam also seems higher than the headlights which makes it difficult to see potholes etc that are close.

Is this normal?

Normal! Flash whilst on dip adds main beam to the mix, so both filaments are lit.

It's actually totally normal on almost all (pre-computer) vehicles.

Yup. Due to the defender having h4 dual filament bulbs, you can't run both filaments continuously, the bulb will overheat.
On a flash its fine and boils down to the mechanics of the switch.

Hi Lambley, how/what did you do to get your side lights back, I've just done the mod with the loom to stop my lightswitch from burning out and, like you, lost the side light option, can you point me in the right direction pls.?

Hi Mike,
Very easy to sort, just needs the dim dip relay removing and a loop putting in its place, ten min job tops.....
