As like some here I spend a good amount of time in Wellington boots and find these excellent. These socks are warm, hard wearing, cushioned and elasticated and they don't end up slipping down your leg into that really annoying bunch in your instep.

Generally speaking my preference is for natural fibres. I quite like Corgi for day to day, the cashmere and silk are nice http://www.corgihosiery.co.uk/shop/socks-men/ but also like House of Cheviot http://www.houseofcheviot.com/gents?___SID=U
I save my knitted vicuña's for best. Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. I'm not exactly 'dainty' so generally need hard wearing clothes. As such, bog basic, handle anything Marks and Sparks for my daily wear. But when I want to cut a dash, I dig out a pair of some sparkly New and Lingwoods. Lime green, orange, pink, striped, checked, polka, skull and crossbones etc etc. Best dress socks by a sea mile.

My favourites have been for some years now smart wool hiking socks.
smart wool are great, but expensive so I have recently switched to Deerhunter Rusky thermo socks which are about 10-20% of the price of smart wool but extremely comfortable and warm. I think they are available in different lengths and sizes. I got mine here: http://www.thearcherycompany.com/shop/proddetail.asp?prod=CDHRTS 2.2 Tdci 110 XS CSW Corris Grey Prince Harry's D3 (gone but not forgotten) 300 Tdi 110 CSW (gone but not forgotten) |

For the last 6 or so years I've been using these:
http://www.marksandspencer.com/5-pairs-of-.../p22036688 Seeing as my parents have an M&S in their town and I don't, mum gets me a packet for Christmas every year. I have a large collection of them, my entire sock drawer is the same and as such I never need to pair them. If one wears out I can chuck it away and I'm not left with an odd sock. They are comfortable, smart, hardwearing. They work in boots and smart shoes, don't fall off your feet in wellies, are comfortable to walk miles and miles in. I use them every day in my work boots and really like them. When using wellies I put a thick pair of welly socks over the top. I've found these ones don't wear out and ball up round the heel and seem to last well: http://cpc.farnell.com/work-force/wfh0090-...dp/HE34533 |

Ideally, socks with a hole in just one end.

Blimey, I'm starting to feel somewhat inadequate on the sock front after reading these posts about this sock for this, and these socks for this, and some are made of this and some are made of that. I've five pairs, one black for formal occasions, and four green for everyday use. One wearing, one in the wash, one drying and one pair ready to wear. Am I the only one in this situation? I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

Mine are just all stuffed in the draw or in the washing.

I do have different socks for my climbing boots but otherwise 'one pair suits all'.

As already mentioned by a couple on here - Icebreaker Merino wool are great, but not cheap. I have just bought some more direct from their website and they are £33 a pair.
I discovered them in Chamonix last year and have loved them ever since for winter wear, either with a pair of jeans on the high street or as part of serious kit when on the mountains. |
