I can't contribute much here without getting in trouble but suffice to say vehicular access to FC land requires a permit.
For anyone interested in doing something on those lines the best thing to do is phone up the relevant district office in the new year and ask to speak to whoever deals with vehicle permissions (usually the recreation department). They will be able to advise you. List of district offices here: Scotland: http://scotland.forestry.gov.uk/managing/w...-districts England: http://www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/HCOU-4U4HZV |

Other than a few high profile events, it seems the use of the forests for general vehicular leisure is not consistent with Forestry Commision policy:
"Forestry Commission (FC) byelaws prohibit the use of motorised vehicles on FC land without written consent and it is FC policy to minimise access to motorised vehicles. The forest is essentially an environment for access on foot, cycle or horse." |

Do the Scottish Forestry people have a different policy to the English regarding access? |

You'd have to speak to the local staff to be sure.
The laws for access to the countryside are different obviously and the culture of open access in Scotland makes things different in a way, but that doesn't really apply to vehicular rights. Forestry is in the process of being fully devolved, which will require legislation to amend the Forestry Act. This will create fully separate bodies in England and Scotland, so in the future it may change. |

Thanks for responding. Next time I'm heading to Northern Ireland I must investigate exploring more of the area - rather than just passing through with a ferry deadline to meet.
