An intersting and creative idea. Folded down, they provide a bit of protection for the front fender,but the hinges probably create more problems.....
The wondeful(and unique) thing about a Defender is that it has flat wing tops anyway! You dont even need add anything. And here, checkerplate can be justifed, but isnīt even strictly neccessary. Another feature that will no doubt disappear with the replacement......  1998 Tdi 90 SW,

There is a vice and some sort of pulley thing on the bumper ?
