Our first mastif had cancer at 9, which is pretty old, but we decided to get him treatment with a cocktail of drugs. it started off really well, but then he was not responding, so the specialist changed drugs, after a number doses our fella was in remission. It did give him an extra 18 months of life, which he loved, as we spoiled him rotten. Would we do it again, in a flash, would highly recommend getting to see a vet cancer specialist, we used Cave Vetenary specialist near Wellington Somerset, who were absolutely brilliant.

My heart felt sympathies Dave. Over the years we've had a few that have developed cancers, mainly mammary cancers which are reasonably easy to treat and we've had a good success rate. Only one a Setter had a tumour which wasn't treatable, but she lived until she was 14 and then she was suffering too much so we had to say goodbye. This though was 20 years ago and cancer treatments have improved immensely. I do hope that this is treatable and has a happy out come for the dog.  I started with nothing and still have most of it left! |

Hi Dave sorry to hear the sad news if it is cancer then you may want to look at specialist referral. I work in the vet industry and would recommend Fitzpatrick referral see site below they have a state of art oncology referral centre at Surrey university which is run by Noel Fitzpatrick who is the super vet on the TV.
http://www.fitzpatrickreferrals.co.uk/serv...ft-tissue/ If you dog has to under go chemotherapy then also look at special diets designed to support these kind of cases I work for Hills pet nutrition and we make a diet that can be used for this see link below. Thanks for the replys, Im out of the country at the minute and sitting at rigs camp site in the land cruiser as its the only place to get good internet connection. Started looking up stuff and had to stop as I was turning into a 1yr old crying baby. Will have a look at these sites when im back at our normal camp where I will be in private. Hate children but our two dogs are my world even topping the 110!! Again than you for your support and information.

I wish you and your dog the best. It's perfectly possible to treat them, as you would a human, but from experience I found that cancer in dogs can be aggressive.
I have lost two dogs to cancer, but luckily you had visible signs early. The two I experienced were internal and went unnoticed until obvious symptoms appeared and by then it was too late. The last one was my English Bull Terrier and that was heart breaking. Good luck, but remember that sometimes the best course of action for the dogs benefit, does not match your own wishes. Don't put your dog through hell just to get a few more months out of them (I'm sure you wouldn't, but it's an easy trap to fall into). New project and it's green: www.projectoverland.info |

Wishing you and your dog well and hope he responds to the treatment....I too have lost 2 Shepherds to cancer... its a testing time for all involved.

Well the wife took Alfie to the vets yesterday to see how his wound is. It's a little infected but should be good by middle of the week they rekon.
They also had the results back from the biopsy. It was / is cancer but they are confident they have caught it all, They said that he will just need more regular check ups and any change in attitude or lumps appear we are to take him back.
