EGR cooler coolant hose diameter

So I'm trying to bypass the coolant around the EGR cooler (full story here: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic42196.html)

Does anyone know the diameter (internal or otherwise) of the hoses that I'll need to join together? And do they reach each other so that I can use a simple double hosetail connector?

Any help much appreciated! Cheers, David
