Diff problem
Hi guys I'm new to forum and had a TD5 Defender for a couple of years but know little about them except that now I do not have drive from the rear diff , Its an 02 TD5 and has discs on the rear , the rear prop spins but that's all , all I heard was a slight clonk and that was it ,there ae no strange noise crunching or anything just no drive ,I am assuming either a half shaft has snapped or the diff has lost some teeth ,am I correct in this assumption ,I know I can change half shafts easily but a diff may be more complex for me if I can find one or does the TD5 Discovery diff fit my Defender please

I don't think (I may be wrong, because I never expected they could) the disco diff fits.

Have you removed the prop to test?

If you have the ability to pull the half shafts out, a diff is just as easy to do. Thumbs Up

It might well be a half shaft or even a hub flange. Until you jack it up and spin each rear wheel then you're only guessing.

Hi mate when you say jack it up and spin each wheel I take it thats in gear yes ?

Sorry it's taken me untill now to reply.
If you jack both back wheels up by rights when you turn one in a clockwise fashion the other should rotate anti-clockwise.
If you chock one wheel or just stop it from turning then with the handbrake off and the gearbox in neutral you should be turning the propshaft.
To see if the hub flanges are good, pop off the rubber hub caps and look to see that when you turn the wheel the halfshaft in the centre turns at the same time.

If you have to change the rear diff the Disco 2 has the rubber doughnut type drive flange so that would need changing over. The diffs are easy to change but are heavy especially when you are laid on the floor changing them. It's more than likely a drive member or a half shaft that's gone.

Hi I have been looking at the different items that may be needed but got confused when things started to talk about 3 and 4 bolt diffs as I don't know what part this refers to, can someone enlighten me please , I can rebuild an old school Ford with ease but as soon as things get electronic ,like a TD5 I'm stuffed

Don't over complicate things find out what's wrong and then take it from there, if you think it might be the diff drain the oil and see if any lumps come out or if the oil is showing signs of heavy metal contamination. If you jack up both wheels and turn one of them does the other turn? If yes which way does it turn?

Well given that a TD5 diff has no more electronics in it than any other diff, you should be fine!
