Disco transfer box in a 110
Hey peeps. I have a 1984 110 CSW with a 300Tdi engine bolted to a LT77 Gearbox the. A Disco transfer box with 235/85/16 tyres.

I know the Disco TF box swap is common and had it on my 90 but have read a few things that make me think maybe it's not the best for a 110??

What's your opinions on this as I try searching but most things good and bad tend to leave out if it's in a 90 or 110 and if it's stock or not so I'm struggling to make an informed decision on wether to keep it or swap it out when I do the clutch next year.

No don't really tow and when I do it's only a little 750kg trailer couple times a year locally!

Just feels gutless when I pull away and sometimes jerky hence clutch change next year as think it might be that being jerky.

I put one in my td5 110 with a mild stage 1 remap. Definitely quieter on the roads. Some times on hills I have to work the gears a bit more, depends on the hill and if I can get a decent run at it. One hill I used to be able to do in 5th, now I am in fourth and thats towing around a 400kg trailer.

When towing rally cars through the forests, so that's a 110, a Harvey frost crane and then a rally car either suspended or attached with a rope, I sometimes use low box depending on the road.

I have not tried anything like a caravan, or a car on a car trailer.

If I was to do it again,(or not had to swap the transfer case) I would have gone for the 5th gear conversion for the R380 from Ashcrofts.

But on the whole I am happy with it for what I do and the towing I do. 1999 Defender TD5 110

I'm pleased with mine. Much quieter and better mpg on the motorway.

The trade off is not being able to travel at 50mph on A roads. 45 in 4th or 55 in 5th is more comfortable. Also in crawling traffic, the slowest you can go is 6mph on tickover, which sometimes it too fast and lots of clutch is required. Hill starts also require a lot more revs.

Best mod you'll ever do, don't hesitate. Did mine myself a couple of years ago and had the same worries but you won't want to go back again. Makes it much nicer to drive in my opinion, mine has got a few more bhp admittedly, but you'll be glad you did.
I got hold of another transfer box and swapped it but kept the original in case I decided I didn't like the ratios, it gathered dust for a few weeks then sold. Give it a try.

Discovery box was already in when I got it. Just heard mixed reviews when fitted in a 110

Mate of mine has just acquired a 90 with the disco T/box and after years of driving a stock 110 he hates it and is considering swapping it out for the normal T/box due to the sluggishness off the mark. Land Rover kind of new what they were doing when they spec'd the 1.4 T/box it's a compromise between cruising speed and ability to haul away from a standstill. They have plumped for the middle ground and if you move away from that then be prepared to suffer at one end or the other. Your 1984 110 may have been built with a 1.6 ratio T/box and was swapped directly to the Disco 1.2 box as part of a Tdi install from a donor car? You might find the middle ratio 1.4 is the best option. The 1.2 upgrade suits discoverys and 90's on the old fashioned 205 size tyre (don't see many of these nowadays Rolling Eyes ).

Yeah the PO fitted a 300Tdi from a disco Auto and I belive the TF box but left the LT77 G/box. Sometimes I find it scary slow off the mark. Especially roundabouts!! Not too bad when moving thou.

Might have to have a look at the 1.4 box. Guessing the 1.6 would be torque as he'll but top out at 55ish?

If you haven't already you might want to have a play with your fuel pump to give yourself so more get go from standstill.

I've just gone from a 300tdi disco with a very played with engine and running 33's to a defender 130 running 1.4 tb r380 with v8 fifth gear and 265x75's. The disco was very quick of the mark when empty but put a couple of ton behind and a slight hill she would struggle until she was boosting. I find the defender still under geared for day to day driving (I haven't towed with it yet,) and and it needs a new transfer box and have thought about going 1.2 but decided against it and thinking of upping my tyre size instead for a happy medium.

I fitted a Disco box to my early 300Tdi 110 and for bumbling along the motorway its transformed the vehicle.

However pulling off is a bit trickier, try pulling off everywhere in 2nd or 3rd and you'll see what I mean. You don't have the luxury of a lower gear though (well you can double declutch the transfer box which I have had to do). Towing varies, I actually find 4th quite a nice gear at 60 with the new ratios. But I did tow the '322 and it struggled, but then so have lorries...

In hindsight (well was foresight as well) I would opt for an overdrive to give the best of both worlds since we do tow with it. But then I did have a free, virtually new (40k) transfer box from a Disco of exactly the same age sat next to it, free of charge...

So if you spend most of the time on the road then I would recommend it, if you tow a lot and heavy loads, then no, or overdrive.
