Must admit once they get to that point I generally stick a new motor and a pair of wheelboxes on. Do the lot. It's usually a bit of wear in everything. Straightforward enough to do but a bit fiddly. Requires removing most of the dashboard and a fair bit of wiggling bits in and out. Not rocket science or anything though.

Hmm. Yeah that's a bit of a bummer plus you're going to have to disconnect all the switches in the dash centre panel and remove the lot. Fiddly more than anything. The other thing you can try is remove the wiper arms, remove the motor and cable, turn the spindles 180 degrees and refit the motor, cable and arms. That sometimes tightens them up a bit in the short term

Mine do this too. Along with not parking, and intermittent wipe only intermittently working! A job for the summer methinks.

Mine did a similar thing a while back, I took the motor to pieces and found a curclip had broken inside, replaced it and not had a problem since. I did put some pictures up on here but can't find them now.
Took a while because it means dropping the dash but only cost me 50p |

If you do decide to replace the wheel boxes only use the Gen. Land rover ones

Before you tackle the job of replacing everything, look closely at the lock screw on the wiper arm splined shaft often the splined shaft gets loose and the wipers flop a bit. Check this out, perhaps you don't need to do more than tighten or change these.

I found today, that my wiper had some play, and as 4RF RDS suggested, the grub screw had come undone and was allowing the arm too much movement. 1999 Defender TD5 110

On the subject of wipers, a couple of questions from a newbie...
My wiper switch and stalk both need replacing. Stall first, got to the old one and found that the plastic clamp thing on the steering column had fractured. Hopefully the PIC will upload. See ss screw and can just see fractured clamp. What part is it and how to order? Ta. Next the switch. I'd there a dash removal guide for later TD5s? Specifically, centre dash, I have 2 screws below but none above, does it unclip? Or do I take top dash off to access? Some folk here say 20 min... ! In what sequence please !???? And happy spannering to all in 2016 Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Sold the much modified 110 2.8, in Oz Brought the 90 home from Switzerland ... |

My son and I tackled this a couple of days ago. The drivers side wiper was totally seized, but the mechanism had been needing replacing for a while. I used genuine LR wheel boxes and drive cable. It took us around four and a half hours. After 10 minutes dismantling you can see the bits that need replacing and false optimism sets in that the job is a lot easier than you think, however to get the wheel boxes out you need to dismantle a lot of dashboard. It's not tricky, just time consuming, be methodical, take photographs and label the wiring The wipers are great now, and much quicker/smoother than before. Mine is a 2004, hopefully that's it for another 11 years! |

I think I'm going to do this to improve the wipers. Two questions:
Can the wheel boxes be replaced without moving the whole motor and cable? Ie while just the top of the dash is off? Can the 'drive wheels' in the wheel box be turned as it only uses the bottom half? I'd be keen to spin it 180 degrees to see if the top teeth that never get used workout as it's 'locked on' to the drive cable I can't see any easy remedy. Finally the motor sometimes lacks power - other times works fine (It worked really well on Saturday in the heavy rain but struggled this morning) I thought it was the frost but the passenger side wiper seems to get stuck. I took the top of the dash off this evening to have a look and the passenger wheel box seems be the issue. Just not sure if the motor needs changing as well. Finally - If it's a full replacement of wheels boxes, motor and cable who has got the best prices at the moment? Thanks, T. 2002 110 CSW TD5, Zambezi Silver 1995 110 CSW 300TDi - SOLD |
