DRL Controller
Hey, it looks like my DRL controller has gone on the fritz!!! They stay on even when the engine is off now!

Can anybody recommend a controller? There a thousands on eBay but you never know what you're getting!

I had a dectane one but I can't find it cheaper than £20+ which seems a little steep!

Maybe approach the likes of urban truck and outbound 4x4. They could possibly supply you with one. 2002 110 td5

Jimb1978, I hate to think of the cost from urban truck once they put there premium on it! Ouch!!

LFW, I can't see how they can be used to control DRL to turn them off when my main lights come on. I'm

Martin, Just a basic control really. DRL on when I start the car, DRL off when I turn on my lights. Not really bothered about dimming etc.

That's what the last box did before its broke.

Good call, I'll drop Dan a message and what they have.

Drawn you a little diagram:

The first relay turns them on with an ignition live, the second shuts them off with the lights. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Drat - too slow Twisted Evil

I've assumed you can power the DRLs straight from an ignition feed, but otherwise as LfW has shown - his left hand relay creates a dedicated ignition switched power feed Thumbs Up

You need a changeover type relay, one with 87 and 87a terminals

Relay terminal 30: +12V Ignition
Relay terminal 87a: to DRLs
Relay terminal 85: Side light
Relay terminal 86: Ground

Basically it is set up as a normally closed switch connecting ignition to the DRLs which is opened by the side lights turning on.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

My only comment about using Dip Beam as the shut-off signal is that the DRLs will come back on with main beam.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Good point, Martin. Thumbs Up

Personally, I also prefer it if people use the sidelights to shut them off (well...I'm not a fan of DRLs anyway). Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Sorry for the slow response guys I'm out with my son and the signals bad.

LFW & Martin, that's brill, thank you.

Would this comply with the DRL regs as mine are in the bumper and previously went off and stayed off side lights or dipped beam.

Martin, by main beam do you mean full beam? If so I'd be happy with that but not sure about MOT man.

At present they are powered directly from the batter via aux fuse box and attach to side light.

Edit, just got it! Use side lights and they will stay off regardless, use dip and they'll come back on with main! Sorry.

To be honest I put them on to try them out and I'm not that keen but they are there so I feel they should work. 2006 Defender Double Cab- Zambezi Silver

I was looking for a controller that would dim the DRL's rather than turn off with main lights and was recommended this by a site sponsor:-

Yes, it would be the full beam. Not such an issue in itself but it would drastically increase wear on the relay. I would simply use your existing connections. IIRC, there's no legal requirement to shut non-obligatory DRLs off with the lights anyway. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK
