The thick part you refer to is a combined thrust washer and distance piece. It goes between the inner nut and the outer bearing and has a rubber ring on one side if I remember correctly that seals against the bearing. The outer hub seal then goes into the hub cavity and seals onto the outside of this distance piece. The idea being to stop axle oil migrating up the stub axle and into the hub bearings.
Was done away with fairly early on. Many argue that the oil should be allowed to reach the bearings and leave out the outer hub seal (or the stub axle inner seal that replaced it) in order to let the migration occur. If doing this you need to ensure that the inner hub seal and the stub axle seal land on which it runs are in good condition other wise your oil will just end up in your brakes. The outer plastic hub cap also needs to seal well in this case, as does the drive member gasket. |

Hmm ive only got the 'Outer' hub seal on one side!!! Im sure Ive read people have removed / added certain seals to allow their bearings to be oiled by the diffs!!! Sounds like a good idea to me and might look into it further!!
