It should all be santorini black. My bet is they have painted in plain gloss base coat as it is far cheaper then getting santorini metallic (£60 a litre last time I bought some)
Paintshops are a nightmare. I bought new van sides for my tonga green hardtop and had them sprayed at local body shop as I didn't have time to do them myself. They were handed back to me carefully wrapped up. I now know why as the finish was appaling and full of runs. I took them back and they looked at my 90 and said they would never be able to get as good a finish as the 90 as it is done in a controlled factory environment. They didn't like it when I pointed out that I had sprayed the 90 myself in my workshop! |

Thanks for the confirmation, Lotus! Your suspicions regarding 'cost cutting' matches my own!
The response I keep getting is, 'yea, but its a Defender' to which I reply... 'so?!'. I'm not too bothered about the odd hologram or scratch here and there as I can sort that out myself. The issue I have is the paint defects are UNDER the clear-coat so there is absolutely NOTHING I can do about it and to make it worse, they're at eye level on roof! |

Stratstone approved body shop is where I left, if it's the one when I had a 90 their quality work required a new roof Mike

Well lets hope it doesn't come to that! This is the one in Stourbridge....?
I received an email from them yesterday saying that they have indeed painted it the wrong colour, after I forwarded them an email where we discussed that it was to be Santorini! Today the car is back on its way to the dealership to have the central locking looked at - there is a long and drawn out (5 seconds or so) electrical whine coming from the door card when you unlock it - which I think is the cause of my start-up problems too! Its only just come back from the bodyshop after spending 5 weeks there so lets see how long they end up keeping her for this time! Wouldn't mind but they've had the car for longer than I have since taking delivery in May!!!! |

They only have one proper body shop (or did) so it will be the same one.
Good luck (ill never let stratstone near me to buy or service a car again, but they do earn their reputation) Mike |

Oh great...! Lets see what damage they can do this time around then!
I'm more bothered that this will be the SECOND time they've taken the roof off now! Just doesn't sit right that they're removing a leak free roof and having to reapply it... just more chances of leaks... will have to wait and see... Unfortunately they broke it so they have to be given the opportunity to fix it! |

Well when they first did the colour change from Montalcino to (the wrong) black, they rang me and asked if I would allow them to remove the roof of whether I'd prefer for them to do it fitted. They said they would be able to achieve a better quality finish if they removed it and would of-course ensure that all the gasket seals were replaced and re-sealed etc....
I would assume they'd redo the process for it again... although they might try and cut corners now they're having to pay for it (rather than JLR warranty)... I'll be asking the question! |

Just check - i had the full works, the nail the coffin for a new roof was, lets say the 3 time, the paint started to crack in the gutter and moved around - the roof bars went on the newly painted roof and it cracked there too (where previously it hadnt), there was plenty more.
Over spray issues were a real pain...maybe they learnt? Part of the issue was its first repair was warranty, but Land Rover said the subsequent repairs were them fixing their mistake so they had to pay, until land rover authorised the move to a different LR body shop, paid the repair and got stratstone to pay them. The work then was perfect - they even under-sealed the defender for me, for free, as they noticed some light corrosion Mike |
