2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 SW Orkney Grey
my defender(s) 90 restoration
Hey all, I've got a couple of 110 pumas and a 110 td5 but have just recently acquired a 1993 ex uk royal service defender 90. has the 2.5D in it but I'm wanting to put a 300tdi auto so my wife can drive it around. Undecided still if I want to paint it a similar silver to the 110 as my wife wants a his and hers thing or restore it back to its postman pat glory. red with stickers and all..

when i first picked him up (bought him unseen)

I want to convert the rear brakes to disks as well. I'm not sure yet what colour I want. Is it a pain to get the 300tdi auto in? or the mounts similar with the 2.5D?

From what I can remember from reading writeups on forums & magazines, a 200 tdi would be a straight swap, but a 300 tdi needs the engine mountings changed. The auto gearbox has a longer bellhousing too which puts the shifter into the seatbox area, but these things have no doubt been overcome by others before now. Best thing would be to try & salvage a 300 tdi and auto from a vehicle you can drive before purchasing, then you can verify they are OK before taking the time to bolt them in. Mark S

I'd agree with Mark above.

There are 2 versions of the 200Tdi, the genuine Defender one is quite a bit different to the one from a Discovery. Most obvious difference is that the Defender version has the turbo mounted above the exhaust similar to the Turbo Diesel. There is also a different timing case.

The Defender version will slot right onto the LT77 gearbox with no mods unless you're fitting power steering which my spares vehicle (also ex-Post Office) didn't have. The Discovery engine will fit with some modification to the exhaust and maybe more.

Incidentally a Defender 200Tdi will NOT fit a RR Classic or Discovery because the timing case, which is in essence a naturally aspirated diesel one, fowls big style! A friend tried this a number of years ago.

The 300Tdi engine is the same for both vehicles but you will have to make your own airbox fitment.
