First and obvious question - what was the source of the new clutch plate and is it the correct one?

Dodgy clutch plate - twisted or damaged on fitting?
I had similar issues with an 'old stock' Borg and Beck that had been left in the supply chain this time last year. On a positive its probably unlikely to let you down, if its the same as mine its purely the little springs in the centre plate not the heavier ones. Best of luck |

Thanks guys
I'm pretty sure the clutch plate's OK, was done by LR specialists over here, probably imported from UK. When up on the hoist you can hear the noise from the very back of the box, and it only does it badly when hot. Can't see how the clutch would give these symptoms ? Appreciate your suggestions. |

The little springs in the centre driven plate smooth out the noise, harshness and vibration from the engine - if they're faulty the vibration and pulses from the engine will be transmitted down the first motion shaft and may well be heard from the rear of the transmission.
If its hot the oil will be thinner and have less damping effect. Everyday there is someone on here telling tales of woe from bad work / mistakes made by main dealers, everyone has a bad day occasionally & Borg and Beck did produce a batch of 'faulty' centre plates that rattled like an old tin can. Good luck |

Thanks guys - quick update - rather than pull box to bits, they had a different type of clutch plate come into stock while they had the car in the shop, and decided to fit that. Bingo ! - now perfect.
So you're both correct. The good plate looked the same as the original apparently, whereas the "noisy" one looked more solid but had a lot less give in the spring area. Don't know brands I'm afraid. Not sure if the problem one was actually "faulty", but the manager's asked for a credit.... Thanks for the advice. |
