How about jacking up the nearisde end of the axle until the offside end is just clear of the ground? That (I would have thought) would skew the axle to get the panhard rod clear of the diff.
Even just jacking the vehicle up under the bumper until the axle is hanging free should do it. This picture (provided by google image search and stolen from the internet) should give you the idea:- Click image to enlarge Last edited by blackwolf on 20th Oct 2015 7:48am. Edited 1 time in total |

As blackwolf said, or if you take the centre grill off and push the radiator up at one end theres just enough room to get a spanner in and hold the nut to undo the bolt!
Had to figure this out myself when fiiting my steering guard last week. |

Yeah I tried jacking up the car, but ... mine is LHD meaning the panhard rod is attached on the other side, i.e. it's linked to the axle on the same side as the diff...

Aha, LHD, I hadn't thought of that! You'll probably have to disconnect the Panhard rod then.
Memo to self - pay attention to the little flag icons! |

Yeap, removing the panhard rod is what I've been trying to do, but I can't even manage to do that...

What's the problem removing the bolt from the axle end of the Panhard rod? It looks from the photo below (again stolen from the web) as though it should be straightforward.
Click image to enlarge Alternatively can you fit the guard by removing the clamp bolts, turning it so that the opening is in the 9-oclock position as viewed in the photo above, inserting it between the Panhard rod and axle, then sliding the gap where the clamp bolts fit along the rod from right to left until the guard is on the diff, then rotating it to the position shown. (Hopefully you follow this, it would be easier to demonstrate than describe). |

The problem disconnecting the panhard rod from the axle is getting access to the bolt behind, it's placed in a recess in the axle itself where the spanner won't fit.
I already tried the rotating method, as I noticed there is a notch in the diff guard, but that's still too tight to fit in between the panhard rod and the diff... I'll give it another try tonight, with the help of a jack to move the rod a bit further away from the axle maybe... |

With diff guard in front of you (opening on top, 2 bolts removed) holding it next to diff between panhard rod and axle
Turn guard 90° anticlockwise Slide the top opening of the guard "on top of" the panhard rod (opening should open up enough with a bit of pressure) so it clamps the rod now slide guard to the left (in front of diff) while still having the top opening clamping the rod (while sliding) When far enough, push top opening of guard towards axle so it releases from the rod Turn guard 90° clockwise, fit on diff and put back guard bolts. No idea if this makes sense but this is how i do it without removing the rod edit: note: do not bend open the 2 arms of the guard too much, you'll struggle to bent it back once the cover is in place and you need to put the bolts back |

Many thanks blackwolf and tatra805, that was the way to go (with a bit of persuasion...) |
