Limited travel on wipers
Hi All,
SWMBO's '98 300tdi has developed a problem with the wipers, the swept arc seems to have decreased by about 4 inches so that when they park/finish the downward swing they stop well up the windscreen, but they are sweeping up to their correct position. With the wipers off and "parked" they can be pushed down to their correct park position. I have tried repositioning them on the spindles but this leaves a large unswept area in the top right of the screen.

Before I dismantle the whole of the dashboard can anybody suggest an easier fix, or what should I be looking for if I have to get the dash off?

This will be caused by wear in the drive linkage, it could be the drive gear/crank pin, the rack/wheelboxes, or most likely the cumulative effect of wear in all these places.

It isn't expensive to overhaul the motor gearbox and crank, and replace the rack and wheelboxes, and the wiper performance will be transformed.

Thanks for the reply Blackwolf. This what I suspect as well! Just hoping that there was an easy fix, not requiring a strip of the dashboard 😕

If it has the pre-Td5 wiper boxes, check the spindle adapters are tight on the wiper shaft which sticks out of the bulkhead.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Thanks Martin, Spindle adapters are tight.

Grenadier, Let's hope they still move after my attempts at an overhaul Laughing
