Puddle of Oil
I went out to the 90 to get some tools this morning and as I walked past the Fullfat I noticed that very distinctive horrible smell of gear oil, looked at the back of the 90 it was covered in it and a big puddle heading towards the Range Rover.
I thought things were getting a little noisy on overrun and was going to have a little look under it today, no need it has pointed the problem out to me. Input bearings on the rear differential.
A quick call to Land Rover parts £587.97 exchange owch Ashcrocts web site £300 ish with delivery ect. Phone call tomorrow to Ashcrofts then. Yes I know I can easily change the bearings myself but with 170thou on the clock it is going to be worn badly anyway so a fully rebuilt one is a better idea all-round. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

Hi Lewis,

With the continued extensive mileage you cover and the stuff you tow to me it is not really that surprising. The beasting you give your Defenders they generally give you reasonable service do they not? I know you've had a couple of historical issues but pleased to see you stick with them. It will be very interesting to see what your next weapon of choice will be as it will soon be time for change?

Are you returning to Poole anytime soon? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

There is a very nasty rumour going round work at the moment that the MD wants to sign a fleet contract with Ford as he likes the Connect and Custom vans we have, they used to have Mondeos in the office as well but the new Omegas have not faired as well, so if this is the case a bloody Ranger Pick Up is the only thing that will tow what I need.
Horrid Idea but hey Ho.

My thoughts would be a D4 commercial but they are 42 grand, might just run the 90 into the ground. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

Found The Problem
I have found the problem and it was not as previously thought.

When I went out to the Land Rover to investigate the oil leak as I said above I was expecting to see a loose rear diff input drive flange poss knackered bearing and oil seal.

No all was fine but the gear oil was everywhere, further investigation found the rear diff pan had dents from the inside out and one large dent that had split the pan to casing weld. Investigation time !! (ever wish you had not started something sometimes)

Wheels off, driveshafts out, prop off, diff out and as they say here on the internet omg !!!

There was only 2 bolts left holding the crown wheel onto the diff carrier and all the others were found floating round in the bottom of the axle, 1 obviously had tried to escape through the rear pan.

No work for the 90 tomorrow and the first phone call will be to Ashcrofts in the morning. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

Well I am in a crap eurobox from Enterprise (Seat Leon) but the upside is its only £20 a day and the diff has been delivered to Ashcrofts in Dunstable. It is looking like he is just going to repair and adjust my old unit. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

Agreed, but even for a heavily used hi-miler it is not the failure mechanism I would have expected! Bearing in mind it's a 90 with a single pin (two gear) Rover pattern diff, I'd expect cross-pin failure or carrier failure, not crownwheel bolt failure. It is a small miracle that the last two bolts held and that the crownwheel didn't come off altogether.

Perhaps they weren't properly done up when it was built. It does appear that LR build quality control on diffs is rather variable.

As you said I have no idea how the last 2 bolts held, especially up Telegraph Hill Friday night. I think I might have shocked the bolts towing an artic up a steep incline out of a building site in Winchester about a month ago and I think the bolts have been coming un-done and shearing ever since. I was surprised it was a 2 pin diff when I took it out as I was expecting a 4 pin as it was ordered and plated as a heavy duty 90.
I will ring Ashcrofts tomorrow to see how they are getting on hopefully collect it Friday and re-fit it Saturday, I had better order some gear oil from Oipe, next job on the internet. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

The Seat will be fine, no tow bar so I cant do silly things with it and I did not put to much equipment in it as it is a quiet week this week.

Ashcroft have phoned the sheared bolts could not be removed from the carrier so I now have a new carrier my old pinion and ring gear and 2 new drive flanges. £320 way cheaper than Land Rover exchange.

I will pick it up after lunch tomorrow, back on the road over the weekend. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.
