Helicoil it! That would be an alternative solution without removing too much material. You'd still have to tap it out though so going to M17 may be the best solution or fit a replacement sump pan - dependant on cost of course!

I had the same thing after trying to do a service on a monster hang over (Not reccomended)
In the end after weighing up the cost of buying the tap, or a helicoil kit of the correct size I just replaced the sump. If you go that route, remember to torque the bolts up to the correct torque and to use a little thread seal as they tend to rattle loose. 2002 Defender 110 DC |

I use always plenty of sealant an both sides off the copper ring and a little on the thread and just thighten it a little more as hand tight. The sealant will keep it in place.
Please note: That it works for me on my Land Rovers is not a guaranty that it will work for you on your vehicles. So don't sue me if it didn't work. Never been keen on ally sumps and regular oil changes. So I brought the Difflock sump plug. No longer do I have to be careful and I put the hose straight into an old oil container and watch it fill, when full stop and chage container. Nice and clean.
Top bit of kit, wish I had brought one years ago. http://shop.difflock.com/defender-drainplug-p-40.html Andy |
