help needed - Old Man Emu springs
Hello fellas, need a bit of urgent help please. I have spent the day fitting a Gwyn Lewis +2" challenge suspension kit to my 90 td5.

The kit has the following Old Man Emu springs in it:

OME 3062 (taller)
OME 2762 (shorter, 5mm narrower)

It took me and my Dad all day to fit one front corner, where we used the 3062 spring (ridiculously tight hockey stick nuts). I based this knowledge on googling on this number which turns up several hits saying this is the front, as well a hit for the 2762 saying it is the rear for a 50mm lift.

However I have just read a post where the front unsprung spring should be shorter than the rear - which is not the case here!

Can anyone advise if we have put these on the wrong way around please? Work commences again at 09:00 tomorrow, I can see there being a great deal of swearing if we've done it wrong! I can't make head nor tail of the ome website. According to them there is no such thing as a 90, only 110 and 130s.

Confused by the spring numbers, but just incase it's any help to you. I fitted OME 751's to the front of my 90, and 763’s to the rear.
Have you checked the Gwyn Lewis receipt? On mine they are listed with part number and front/rear, but even if not listed position, he possibly would of grouped rear and front items together.

Also confused by "narrower", they should all be the same diameter on a 90

Thanks Andy. The 4 digit numbers are what's on the packet -the last three digits are on the spring label so that possibly explains the confusion with the numbers.

Gwyn told me the invoice would say which was which, but in the rush to travel up to my parents house yesterday I have somehow not brought the invoice Embarassed

I have just 'mentioned' that I know have some doubt if we have done it right, and to my surprise fire and flame did not erupt, so I am a little more relaxed. I'll give Gwyn a ring in the morning to confirm.

There was very little in it, could be just manufacturing tolerances?

Makes sense with the numbers then

I don't know if you can look up my spring ratings to give you an idea of what rating front versus rear? Mine was a HD setup so different to most but may answer your question.

Did Gwyn email you a quote or anything that you could check?

Unfortunately nothing I can access from here, I'm over 100 miles away. I'll ring him in the morning.
Did you have the front radius arms from him also for a matter of interest? I assumed that they aren't handed, they both looked the same?

when i bought my kit, gwyn actually wrote on the boxes which were front and rear in marker pen lol. I cant remember the OME code numbers off hand for mine.

it is normal however for the rear springs to be longer than front, but i wouldnt take that as an absolute indication of whether its correct, they could just be firmer!

what are the free lengths and spring rates of what you purchased?

Phew all sorted, we had got them right, confirmed with the excellent and ever helpful Gwyn Lewis team this morning.

I have not been able to find stats for the longer front OME 3062 springs.

The rears, OME 2762 are listed as:

300-340 lbf/in with a 400mm free height, suitable for a Defender 90 constant 200kg 50mm lift (I have no idea what this 200kg constant refers to).

I havn't measured the free height yes, I'll and do that before we fit it this afternoon. The fronts looked about 20mm taller than the rears when i had side by side, so perhaps they are firmed.

I thought we'd have this job in two days - but it turned out to be a nightmare to undo some of the nuts. Day 1.5, and the progress so far is front right done, front left all off ready to assemble. We had a 6 foot bar over ring spanner at one point on the front radius arms, somewhat surprised that the spanner didn't break. I can see why some folks just cut the off.
