The standard bumper is really not very robust. I think you may be over-complicating your project and it would involve quite a lot of engineering to achieve your goal. Why not just buy a set of decent bumperettes and bolt them on? They'll be fit for purpose and have no sharp edges and look the part too.
**EDIT** Found a thread that was toying with the idea of fitting a front bumper on the rear as an addition for a project. There is a decent 'mock up' picture page 2. It may give you an idea on how long you want them if you do decide to cut and nail them on!
