An option connecting to the MY15 negative battery terminal
Hi Guys

I installed a merit socket in my Defender today.

It is positioned under the flap that covers the latch to the passenger side battery compartment.

I disconnected the heated seat plug and the hooks of the seat back stowage and removed the seat.

Lifted the flap and undid the latch and slid the top cover of the battery compartment , forward and off.

Lifted up the covering and squeezed it back under the seat bar you use to slide the seat back and forward and back out of the way, to access the battery.

I put some masking tape on the spot I wanted to position the socket and drilled a pilot hole.

Removed the masking tape and changed the pilot drill for the stepped hole drill bit.

One 18mm hole through the battery compartment wall just below and towards the drivers side of the latch.

I made a loom that consisted of a 30 amp rated inline fuse holder, soldered into 6mm Square twin sheathed cable with a 20 amp automatic reset circuit breaker, with cable lugs soldered and crimped on both + and - wires and soldered, a _l configured plug on the other end, which plugs onto the back of the merit socket.

I undid the nut on the conical battery clamp and took the nut right off making sure that the clamp stayed on the battery terminal.

Then, using a stepped hole cutter (same one I used the drill the 18 mm hole in the battery box), drilled out the lug on the black (negative cable lug on my loom) until it seated low enough on the conical clamp fixture, so that I could get the nut started on the thread and fastened the nut down until the battery clamp was tight on the battery terminal.

In drilling out the cable lug, using the stepped drill bit, I did not drill all the way through, so that the sides of the enlarged hole, in the lug were bevelled, so that they would sit on the cone of the battery clamp at a similar angle.

Then used a short (15mm long) M8 (8mm) bolt and washer to bolt onto the positive terminal (there is a vacant spot for it on the passenger side of the positive battery clamp under the red cap that lifts off).

My loom was long enough so that I could run it to the side of the negative side of the battery then curl it back and around the front of the battery so that I could access the tyre changing tools without interference from the wiring loom.

Then clipped the plug on the back of the merit socket.

Tested OK.

Replaced the seat etc. finished.

United Kingdom 2015 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Santorini Black
Hi. I had the same issue recently on how to connect another cable to the negative terminal. I like your idea and I had thought somehow of using the conical clamp with a terminal. However, a forum member advised me to just bolt to the chassis outside the battery box. Which is what I did. But well done with your idea Smile 2015 90 XS Santorini Black
