Strange vibration after new wheels / tyres fitted.
Hi,

I have a 2008 Defender 90 XS and just had new wheels fitted (16" sawtooth alloys with BFG AT KO2 265 section tyres) and now there is a strange vibration which can be felt through the steering wheel at 55-70 mph but only on certain road surfaces.

Basically if the road is smooth - no vibration, but the slightest bumps or undulations on the road and then the vibration occurs.
Its not a really bad vibration but its enough to be annoying,

I have had the wheels balanced 3 times and they are supposed to be perfectly balanced, and the fact that there is no juddering on smooth roads probably supports this?

I've also had the rear springs on the landrover changed from Heavy duty to standard county springs.

I was wondering if this vibration was just a 'feature' of the BFG KO2 tyres (previously I had general grabber AT's on) or is it to do with changing to slightly softer springs?

Any ideas what may be causing the issue?

Thanks!

Wheel vibration
Hi phn, I have a similar problem new sawtooth wheels and BF Goodrich 265x75x16 tyres.
I have very noticeable vibration between 80to 90 kph, I have had them rebalanced twice and still the same problem.
There is some 200grms of weight been added to these wheels.
These wheels and tyres were purchased in the UK and shipped to me here in France.
Have you solved the problem?
I have had to remove them and put back my boosts.
Thanks

Hi Allan,

The issues is not yet solved but the garage says they will investigate this week.

What was interesting is that several of the tyre garages I spoke to said that off road tyres in general were "impossible" to balance properly.

I'll let you know what happens after the car has been to the garage.

Thanks,

Philip.

Were the new wheels the Sawtooth 'Style' copies or genuine? I seem to remember somebody else on here having the same problem with copies.

I think they are copies, as they cost much less than the genuine Landrover ones.

Yes they are BF Goodrich All Terrain TA KO2 Mud and Snow.

Do you think it is a common factor that all such tyres make the same juddering?

As an alternative and if you're willing to shell out try dynamic balancing beads. Mixed reviews but wheels are constantly balanced and they work extremely well for me. Be wary dependent on whatever supplier chart you look at the recommended weights for specific tyre sizes may vary by up to 100 grammes per tyre and too few and you may experience issues that require more beads adding to them. Read the entire thread. Obviously if there is a manufacturing defect in the wheels there is not much anything can do. Have you considered getting the wheels run on a balancer without tyres to ensure they're straight and true, this is what I did to ensure a good starting point?

Thumbs Up

Hi, the sawtooths that I purchased are copies with the BFG all terrain ko2 fitted.
I have now upgraded to a set of bowlers which I am awaiting delivery.
Having had discussions with the supplier there is a possibility that the problem could be with the tyres.
I will update when I have had the tyres fitted to the bowlers.
Could be a nightmare if it is the tyres as I will have to get back to the UK !
