Steering Box - Genuine/Reconditioned/Upgraded
Evening all,

I've just taken my 2004 Defender 90 TD5 to my local garage to give the vehicle a once over and they have come back and told me that it needs a steering box and seals as it is leaking power steering fluid and there is too much play in the steering.

Is it best to go with a reconditioned steering box, a genuine LR steering box or an aftermarket upgraded one?

Thanks

Matt

Hi Matt,
I had to put a steering box on my last discovery. I looked at all the options and after reading up plenty forums etc I decided on a new Adwest box. Yes it was expensive, but it really is the best. If you are considering holding on to the motor for any length of time I'd bite the bullet and go for an Adwest box. Read up on it, you won't find any complaints about them. Roddy

Hey Roddy,

Adwest, is that a direct plug-in-and-play box or does it need an adapter/converter for it to work?

Matt,
I believe they are the original manufacturers of the Landy box. I had no problem fitting mine, unfortunately it had the wrong type drop arm for my age of motor, but this was easily changed over. I read too many horror stories about people fitting seal kits etc, didn't fancy taking the chance.
Roddy.

John,

Was it the original Land Rover steering box that you got reconditioned or did you already have an aftermarket one?

Oohh good question. I think I gave them a Gen LR (I assume it was) and not 100% what make it was I got back.
Maybe if you send them your Gen LR steering box, you could get that one repaired and sent back.

I would have to check the current installed steering box to see what make it is.(if I can find the info) 1999 Defender TD5 110

Matt,

Where in Surrey, Adwest are in Reading and will sell you a box direct. It was cheapest option when i did mine.

Adwest make them for LR.

Tiger,

Where in Surrey? Where did I buy the car from, where did I get it serviced or where do I live?

Ok, so a genuine LR should be of good quality then?

Sorry, don't care where you live just that some bits of Surrey are near Reading, some aren't.

It was more of a question about how easy would it be to go to Reading
