Help: loss of power and black smoke from exhaust
Mine is a 2009 2.4 TDCI with an Alive Tuning re-map. Felt a drop in power recently and had the filters etc checked and replaced where necessary. Still didn't get back the extra perkiness that one gets after an Alive remap. Have also noticed that she burns quite a bit more fuel than usual and also black smoke from the exhaust after the engine is heated. The temp gauge is normal. Grateful for your customary help and advice. Cheers, Tim

First point of contact, should be Alive, really.

Though I'm guessing a split or blown off intercooler hose.

Hoping you sort it fast.

Check the pipes from intercooler, and around the turbo.
Is it making any strange whooshing noises? 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

Not quite sure it is a whooshing sound but intermittently have heard a loud noise from the engine. Not a rattle or anything. I suppose one could call it a whooshing sound. Will have the hoses checked once again although I had that cleared at the time of replacing the filters. Could a split hose result in extra fuel consumption and black smoke?

A faulty intercooler hose could. Check them near the steering shaft.

I had a split intercooler hose once. A whooshing sound on the highway, especially if trying to go to speeds higher than 90kmh. But no black smoke at all, and no other engine sounds either. Dealer replaced by new, but recently have switched to stainless intercooler pipes which are available for the Puma 2.4 engine.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Black smoke is caused by the car running rich. So check for loss of turbo boost pressure.
Things like a egr stuck open, water gate stuck, failed boost pipe/intercooler, clogged air filter.

And failing that over fueling from a bad injector or similar.

But 1st get hold of Alive and see if they have had it happen before
