use this programe for resizing. easy automated resizing

Upload to the gallery, then click the "use as my avatar" button when you view the photo.

Creating a "Large" image from the resizer linked to by gilarion is no bad thing, and then uploading that instead of the original image, it'll drastically cut the upload time from your computer to the site.
