If your taking the carrier off - there should be nothing wrong with the paint...but you will have some holes - how you fill it is up to you.
I saw rubber gromets used on one that looked neat - i dont like the CP squares people fit. As for the door car - a trim removal tool or careful use of a screwdriver - loads of plastic pop studs. ANY self respecting land rover owner should carry these as spares - this could be your chance if not already ...i wonder if i have any left Mike |

Mine didn't have the wheel on the door when I bought it, the holes just had the bolts filling them.

You can bolt them to the bulkhead inside - this used to be common. Mike

I too have never suffered a puncture in years of Land Rover ownership I did have a BFG All Terrain that threw it's tread though! With all the gizmos, aerosols and get you home puncture repair kits available it does beg the question that in the UK how necessary is a spare? That's another reason I couldn't justify shelling out over £300 for a spare to match the wheels fitted to my vehicle! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Virtually no LGV's carry spare wheels now... I don't like the way the rear door slams shut when parked on a slope. My mate cut 8" off his Labradors' tail in his Defender and i reckon there is a H&S issue with the Defender door as there is no stay to keep door open. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

I do agree about the rear door - its annoying if nothing else.
Personally I wouldnt never be without a spare in this or any other country - especially if the tyres were in someway not the norm. I know a few people who have been caught out on Sundays, holiday periods, remote areas etc. Commercial recovery contracts are a different ball game Mike |

Out of interest, is that a Kumho KL71 by any chance? 265 or 285? Can't wait for my Sonic carrier! |

Door card removal is a very straightforward job - just be systematic
I put a swingaway carrier on mine as soon as I bought it (my Td5 door dropped quite a bit) but it still shuts on you if you're parked on a camber. Normally I end up tying a bungee to the handle and hooking it to the fuel cap recess. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |
