Looks like a great idea!
Dont subs need an enclosure of some sort for air pressure? I'm very keen to hear how you get on with this and what it sounds like. I would love to do the same! Tim |

Subs have to have a box with ports designed for there size... guess if you calculated the size of the seat base and made the correct ports / correct sub it would work... i also would completely seal the seat base as i believe they aren't from the factory despite best efforts.

Subs don't need ports but as said the box would need sealing. Also the seat box would probably need lining with something as the metal isn't very thick. In my seat boxes there is a battery in the passenger side so this would need removing but the size of the box would be close to the 1 cubic ft which is good for a twelve inch sub but in the drivers side box there is the ecu and fuse boxes etc and the box isn't really big enough, so it probably would be possible but with a lot of work and you'd have to find space for the electrical bits or battery so I personally wouldn't. I thought id make it even more difficult for myself..... i want a ported enclosure. I have already put together a sealed enclosure with a 12" JBL sub which weve put in my brothers 130, and are about to turn it into a ported enclosure using a different sub as it just doesnt give the low down rumble i like.
So i would plan to make a port at the back long rectangular rather than round as this suits the seat box but also is easier to tune to the sub. The volumes are whats tricky. A sealed 12" enclosure needs to be approx 31L for a JL normal sub. A vented needs much more at say 41-45L. Without the volume it will sound fairly naff. Having done some research, JL also now do the following....... http://www.jlaudio.co.uk/product/54216.498.../_/12TW1-4 This is a 12" driver, shallow mount, with the same excursion capabilities as a standard 12" sub, but its designed to work in a sealed enclosure at approx 10L, and a vented one? Bang on 30L. So assuming i use one of these shbs, the seat box should be perfect for a vented sub. Other things to do (youre all correct) Relocate fuse box etc from drivers side seat box to new custom made under cubby electronics box - nakatananga is great but i will probably make one and trim it the same. Seal the box properly. Thing is, i think it would work, the engineering says itll be fine, ive found a speaker etc etc, but ive no idea whether itll make your lower body numb!! Maybe i could try it by putting a cheap 12" driver in there and see what the result it like. |

With it pointing directly at you the vibrations would probably become annoying and uncomfortable, especially on long journeys. I thought about placing a sub in the seat box a couple of years ago but quickly ruled it out. Ray
