United Kingdom 2013 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Havana
Limp Mode
Hi All,
Driving home last night, tried accelerating on the A5 through Milton Keynes and suddenly lost power. Engine warning light came on and engine went into limp mode ( max 40 mph) no nasty noises or smells. This is a 2 year old TDCi 2.2. Now sitting at Stratstone Aylesbury until at least next Thurs.
Any ideas from the forum?
All the best
James

I had something similar happen once on my 09 2.4. I took it to the dealer who said they examined the software or what is in the clever box. No fault was found but the Dealer said it had probably been a fuel problem. I was not convinced but its never happened again and that was a few years ago.

Thank you Crofter.
Hadn't realised that the Defender was able to go into Limp Mode.
Let's hope it is something as simple as that.
Regards
James

Could be a sign the fuel filter needs changing.
Has there been any slight hesitation when a else rating and especially accelerating and moving off?

Sometimes different brands of fuel doesn't help especially supermarket stuff.

My 2008 2.4 does this periodically, it's been to an indie, it's been to Stratstone in Stoke and has even been looked at by an independent engineer..... Stratstone told me that it was likely to be the seals in the turbo (46000 miles) the independent engineer poo-pooed this and the only thing he could find was a smear of oil where the injector is....the last time it happened, I put the nano-com on it and showed an issue with a glow plug...Don't get any smoke, no excessive oil consumption....nothing, it's just a mystery!
