Hi all
I have an R380 tranny in my 110. When I am slowing down and coasting to a stop (clutch in or out of gear). It seems that the propshaft is fighting between the tranny and the axle. I think this is backlash, but I am not sure what backlash really is. It sounds like the propshaft or axles are being pushed by the slowing axle. I am not convinced it is the propshaft but that is my first assumption. Putting the clutch in and out makes no difference in sound but if I go back in gear while slowing the noise and pulsating goes away. Just a note that it is a "new to me" R380 that I am using with my original propshafts (F&R) from my V8 as they fit fine Any thoughts or things I can check Cheers Tim Series II in pieces 1984 Defender 110 (3.5l V8 now 300TDI) |

Have you checked the handbrake is not dragging?
Back the adjuster off and go for a drive. |

Thanks, I will check that although it rolls easily when on a slight incline.

If it's all on coastdown then it doesn't should like typical backlash which would display more as you moved on/off throttle.
It sounds more like one or more of your ujs are binding at a particular point of the prop rotating? Last edited by Supacat on 1st Jul 2015 4:41pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Supcat,
Yes, it does sound like binding. On my way out of work today I tried it right out of the parking lot with not noise or sounds, but coming off the motor way after only a couple of min at speed (50mph) it did it again. I may try greasing the UJ to first see if this helps. I have a handy little video camera I may attach under the truck to see if it pics anything up. I will let you know (especially Hufflepuff) if I find anything. When I put the R380 in the rear propshaft did seem a bit tight when going on. So i jacked the rear end up. This is what the noise sounds like when coasting out of gear from 15kmh to stopped

Have you checked the rear drive members and shafts? Too much play there.

Mike, you mean the propshaft right? There is some play but not much. How much is acceptable?

It's hard to tell from a short video, but I'd be checking half shaft splines at the drive members, then I'd check the prop. The next step would be the rear diff. Doing the same test on my vehicle exhibits at least half less rotation before pickup. This is probably the diff backlash. You can tell by looking at the prop as you do that test.
It's entirely possible its wear in various parts of the drive line which cumulatively add up. Clunking can also be worn suspension bushes. |

Just reread your description and any kind of pulsating or grinding noise is more likely props than diff or shafts. Try greasing the ujs. If they won't grease up then just replace them. Cheap test.

drop 1 wheel back on the ground and then you need a mate to look underneath as you rotate the wheel back and forth, is the input to the diff moving but the out put to the transfer box not, ie play in the prop? if the hand brake is on and the input to the diff is not moving its not the prop but could be the drive flanges on the shaft or the diff, remove the drive flange caps, is there movement there if so its probably them that are U/S if not its probably the diff, has your diff got a cover ie Salisbury if so drain the oil and remove the cover and repeat the test excessive play will be obvious.
good luck DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |
