What do I need to look for - Series 3
I've been looking at this.....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rover-Serie...1a02009abb

If there are any experts on here then it'd be great to have a bit of advice of what to look out for, do's and don'ts, what to ask etc. I know what to look for in a Defender and I've had a couple of the first Defenders - or Ninety's from 84 onwards but not as early as this.

Always nice to have a Series with a bit of history/story to tell.

Main thing to look for is Rust, bulkheads crumble spectacularly!
Out riggers on chassis, easily replaced, rear cross members can end up like Swiss cheese.

Main thing I always look for is originality, that's where it counts.
It's too easy to "cobble together" something out of a load of parts, there are loads about like that.
But to find an unmolested one with pretty much all its originality still in place is quite special.

Original Series vehicles are fetching a premium now, if all the numbers add up!

It all depends on what you want out of one?
Do you want a sound investment, or just a bit of fun?

Personally for me, the one listed is a bit steep.
Series 3s are still very affordable, unlike series 1s, 2s are becoming pricey for a good one.
I've got a S3 tucked away in a barn, waiting to be resurrected!
I thought I should have one in the collection before they start to rise in price.

I had to have a S3 as its what originally got me into Land Rovers many moons ago.

Thanks,
I'm after one for just a bit of fun really, not so much as an investment, as long as it doesn't end up being a total money pit!
I had a couple of nice pickups in the past, one was a barn find that needed a fair bit of mechanical and chassis work, the other was pretty good other than it needed tidying and cosmetics, something in-between would be great. I like the idea of the flexibility of a soft/hard top and a pickup.

A late reply I know (sorry) but also look out for it jumping out of gear, as S3 gearboxes are prone to it.

Look for everything you would look for on a defender and beware of the bitsa-rovers...... You never know what your going to get!

As mentioned above rot- crossmember, outriggers and front dumbirons- I helped @Rallysteve on here rebuild his S3 a few years ago- it had rot everywhere! He did a perkins prima conversion on his which was superb, difficult to find one now though.

The diesels are very slow and rattly, the petrol are slightly less slow and slightly less rattly. You can get tdi converted ones for sensible money now too!

Hope thats helps slightly!

Chris

Thanks for the replies, it's kind of gone on the back burner now as SWMBO has just pointed out I've got a few jobs around the house to do Yawn
But I'm sure if something comes up I might get time to slope out and take a look...
