in Norway you must drive with dipped headlamps even on sunny days ! - I believe it's the same in Sweden

I agree this is why I do not liek them, I feel it is an unnecessary feature and by subconsciously programming people to only notice things which are bright and distracting, you train them to stop looking for the hard to spot things like kids or cyclists. But that is just my opinion |

Guy’s
As a present cyclist and a past motorcyclist, I been hit off bikes when wearing a large daglo reflective yellow jacket and a yellow helmet, both times I was told by the nice car driver ‘sorry - didn’t see ya mate’ .. some times the need for the ‘mark one eyeball’ is all you need, but it needs to be used first! Personally the more things I can give Mr. Average to help him see me the better, this is purely self-preservation. As I drive a big grey wagon that becomes invisible in rain, mist and dusk.. I personally feel that bright lights are an advantage .. I tend to turn my headlights on early and off late in all the above conditions to help save all the hassle of getting myself and my wagon fixed. Just my opinion … but I don’t think that there needs to be laws put in place to make you use day light lights – just a common sense approach on how to use the lights you have … However I do like the ideas of the extra bright LED sidelights though even just for the power saving benefits…! Wyv, me to...Drive great big grey 110, and always turn the lights on when the wet stuff appears...Nas front lights with LED bulbs are bright enough. The only problem i have is that when listening to radio in landy and flickin light switch i loose reception. Putting Dreams on Drives at JLR Solihull..

Well if you have seen the sand storms we have down here in Dubai or any country in the middle east, visibility can reduced down to 50/100 metres and it can get very dangerous driving. UAE has one of the highest road deaths in the world. I just want to be safe on the roads. I have placed the LR Safari 5000 Lamps on which are fantastic but they do literally blind other cars and they do use more power. Can't say I'm a fan especially being a motorcyclist.
One bike is a 2009 so runs on dip beam all the time, I have no choice in the matter. The other is a 2002 so still has an on-off switch. Despite this I ride with lights on as it does help make you stand out and always have done since i started biking in 1979. However the reason bikers stand out is because most other vehicles DON'T have lights on during the day. Once all vehicles are running around with ultra brite DRLs then bikes will just disapear into the background. What Harvey is referring to is a phenomena that means as your eye concentrates on the light source an area around the light effectively becomes invisible, you see it but the brain doesn't really register what's there. So other road users motorbikes, cycles etc are harder to spot. The same happens with motorbike headlights but as it's smaller the effect is less pronounced. And as a biker as it's your light the viewer concentrates on that's the effect you want . Nothing for it but work out how to fit a .50 cal browning or a GPMG on the handlebars Now I know why I always wanted one of these Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated MAD COW 2007 90 Hard Top - 2009 BMW F800GS - 2002 CCM 604E Dual Sport Project90 |

Thanks 'madcow' that's what I meant ;/)
I agree with Wyvern & the other chap in a grey Defender, you look at the conditions and act accordingly. It involves thinking and responding. If people are so thick as to not be able to select the right times to put their lights on or off then they shouldn't be on the road! Having auto lights just excuses and hides incompetence! I've had several cars with auto lights/wipers etc and I usually just switch them off. I prefer making that decision myself. I sometimes find the systems come on when there is no need and on other occassions I want them on and get nothing. And don't get me started in automatic bloody gearboxes!!! ;/) Morning slobbing in bed on my mobile catching up before taking the bike out for a ride (as in mtb no euthanism) :-/ |

So you would not like my Audi Q5 quattro, it has 7 speed automatic gears + flappy paddles, auto lights on/off, auto dip/full beam switching, wipers, locking, climate control, auto seats, cruise and day running lights.
both 4x4s, but my 110 is the complete opposite, so it' nice to have the choice. I've not had DRL's before but it's amazing just how many pedestrians notice them in the day. Last edited by bpman on 22nd Aug 2010 4:24pm. Edited 1 time in total |

TBH I like the Q5, but you're right, I would not be impressed with everything being automatic

I have just fitted the OEM LED rear lights bought from Tim and MobileCentre, can't recommend them high enough and bear in mind that his kit is full LED, the landrover kit doesn't provide LED for FOG and REVERSE. However mine now has LED all over
Very happy with the service from them. |
