Hi there!!
Just a quick question I will like to install 4 light beams (100 W each) in the Defender and I have concerns about if the standard battery /alternator can sustain the electric consumption. Any thougths? Cheers and thanks. Eduardo Eduardo MY 2007 110 SW PUMA 2.4: Big Fog of 64' MY 1994 Jayco 1207 Folding camper: "El Tremendo" Click image to enlarge |

Bit tanked to work it out myself at the moment but here are the formulas, will have a go and look at it again tomorrow:
Power = Voltage X Current Therefore Current = Power divided by voltage 400 watts divided by 12 volts = 30.4 amp consumption dependant on the way they're wired up! Your battery/alternator should handle the extra load easily dependant on other extras you may have fitted, you may like to consider other potential loading like heated seats being switched on at the same time as a precaution! Hope this helps from a slightly tanked K9! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Thanks K9F for you prompt answer
I made the same calculation but I dont had any idea if the alternator/battery have enough spare amperage to take the extra load safely. Just I have the winch that most probably we not be used in conjunction with the lights and a VHF radio. Cheers PD. Good luck with your interwievs!! Eduardo,
I am not sure of the amperage rating of a Puma alternator (I know a man that does - Dgardel) but when you do a search Defender alternators are available in several ratings...the norm being 65 amps! Your VHF radio will not draw much current...Your winch will....Your battery/alternator should under normal conditions handle the extra load with the lights easily. Using the principle of 'diversity' and selection of loads you will be fine....If you don't want to blow your main fuse I personally would only operate the lights with the following systems not being used at the same time, Winch, seat heating, air conditioning and maybe heated widscreen/rear window simply as a personal precaution. Alternatively upgrade your alternator to 100 amp. Not wishing to teach you to suck eggs....Eduardo please ensure when wiring up the lights you use an independant relay and cable that has the 30 amp plus current carrying capacity. Another formula worth playing with when messing about with electrics is Voltage = Current X Resistance (especially if you know the resistance value of the 100 watt bulb or indeed any equipment you may be fitting) Thanks for the good luck wishes! Thanks Dgardel (as ever reliable and quick),
In that case Eduardo you have no worries whatsoever....Get fitting and don't forget the photos afterwards.... If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Thanks to both!!
I check yesterday night the alternator in the Microcat and in fact, is a 150 AMP and the standard battery can run up to 830 Amp and load 100 A/h so, no problem are foreseen. KF9. No problem I bought a HELLA - OPTILUX kit that includes its own relay, cables and fuses. I will post photos as soon as I mounted it together with the new low profile roof rack that we are designing with MK (probably 2-3 weeks from now). No need to thank...I like finding out more and more myself, undoubtedly it'll help others too! The difficult thing is trying to retrieve the information later....
