Hi,
Trying to establish where all the earth's are that could impact on the obdII outlet. I would have added this on to a previous post but can't find it anymore?? So the other night I found the earth clamp on the battery was very loose which I thought was the end to my woes (and it seemed to be for a short while) after having the ultragauge went blank on me. After refitting the clamp properly I went for a quick drive and was astonished to find the Rev counter going up then dieing, temp gauge going up, alternator light coming on along with tc light??? Wtf i'm thinking?? Unplug the ultragauge and everything back to normal and better I even THINK The ultragauge display was brighter but can't say 100%. Anyway things are bad again and I'm wondering if there could be another earth causing these problems and what could cause the gauge display to be less bright? Please help 4.5 years of this is killing me slowly. |

Are you only worried about the earth to the obd socket?

M90. It's a case of which poor earth would cause the obdII not to function 100%
Thanks lorryman - need to look at the connection to instruments and obdII socket although I can't see how that would make any difference as the wires are all open circuit - unless two were shorting? One day....one day......... |

Get an insulation tester crank it up to 1000 volts and check your earths. What could possibly go wrong?
That was a joke Wayne by the way! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

I need some cheering up ....and thankfully mine only does 500V so I should be fine
thanks Munch90. it kind of beggers belief - everything seems to have something wrong with it..... anyhow while concentrating on the electrics - I double checked the battery earth which is tight n secure after my 'modification'. the main chassis earth is also clean n secure after refitting last night (although I was a little surprised not to find a serrated washer to ensure a good contact?). got to work and straight away went for the relays below the seat - odd - the first from the left (nearest the rear) was notably warm? - I've swapped it with the one next to it temporarily until I can a- get a replacement and b- squeeze the female connectors together a little although none are particularly loose as I've checked and sprayed with contact spray more than once before. off to check the wiring diagram now to try and determine what the hot relay is for? lorryman (trust you're well?) - many thanks for the post and hence me revisit to the relays - no mapping has been done recently yet after connecting the earth to the battery properly I had the dodgy rev counter, temp gauge, alternator light AND abs. I'll have another read through the link to fully take on board what has been said - thanks again...... now where's that mega gone........ |

If it's an older megger that requires someone to crank the rotating handle and you are willing to hold the probes on your earlobes I'll do it. I'd even bring my 1000 volt model.

presumably one lead on my ear lobe the other to earth - presumably so I can hear the relay clicking in and out better?

great - I presume the others just weren't in use then?
thanks Munch90. I'm going to have another look but I don't think there's anything to tell you what the relays are - its a case of working out what wires go to them? |

one thing i would check is how low battery voltage goes when starting
i noticed how low mine dropped after having couple of problems gauges went mad , no tacho etc knackered brand new alpine double din radio so tried fitted bigger higher output battery disconnect battery for 5 mins sorts gauges out fitted small motorcycle battery on split charge to power radio while cranking (radio now stays on while cranking ) fitted so switch on earth to heater plug relay ( turned off plugs and left them off , plugs draw about 60-80 amps so cuts amp draw on battery ) |

I seem to recall it drops to about 11.8V (sometimes) and hence occasionally brings up the alarm on the ultragauge?
...doesn't yours struggle to start with out the glow plugs working? thanks. |
