Sounds like a good job. Mine is heading towRds the unwanted rattle, chattering away whilst in neutral . So heading for a replacement clutch, quick question. Is the issue now resolved or will we be swapping out clutches again in another 35,000 miles? Which is the best replacement unit to buy and what other components do we swap out whilst we performing the surgery

I got an AP Driveline clutch, Borg and Beck release bearing.. Rattle gone..
The old plate was fukt.. Despite almost zero wear after 55000 miles.. And loads of second gear pull aways.. I reckon it'll have to be done again in bout 5 years.. But having done it once, I'd def give it another go.. No other bits replaced, but lubed the props while they were off.. Next time I'll do it with an engine crane through the cubby hole and tunnel, and not a transmission jack.. It's too unstable.. ... ,-------, .. I [__][_]|__ .. I __ |"_|"__| .. Transmission jack used properly shouldn't be at all unstable! It was a transmission jack, not an ordinary trolley jack, that you were using?

Yep, Draper transmission jack... It wasn't the fault of the jack to be fair... The gearbox has so many bits poking left right up and down, It's bl00dy hard to get it balanced.. Even poking bits of ply under the GB didn't help when it needed wiggling, they just fell out.. Maybe I should have gaffer taped them on!!
The cat is a right sod to get lined up.. Took the best part of half an hour.. But when it goes in.. AHHHHH!!! But despite all the frustrations, it has been a great learning experience.. The only "major" component to go back on now is the cross member.. Then a few minor bits, like gear sticks and carpet!!! ... ,-------, .. I [__][_]|__ .. I __ |"_|"__| .. Hapy to report that I had ZERO nuts n blts left.. Clutch is much smoother and a hell of a lot lighter... One heck of a learning curve, but oh so satisfying having done it myself.. And much cheaper than going to the Stealers.. One tip, fill the boxes from the cubby hole, don't try it from below.. My pressurised bottle worked brilliantly.. less than 10 mins to fill both boxes.. Re the jack, you may find it is worth (as I did) taking a flat piece of ply and screwing some blocks etc to it so that it supports the box safely and the blocks can't fall out. A ratchet strap (or the jack's chains) will then hold it securely. For the t-box, if you don't have the LR jack adaptor, then a wedge shaped block with a lip to stop the box sliding off does the trick.
Filling the gearbox is so easy from above, isn't it? I have contemplated putting an access panel in the floor (in the same way that early series vehicles had) but with all the carpets etc it hardly seems worth it. I am glad that the job went well for you! It is a major and quite daunting task the first time you do it, but a great feeling when it all works and you know that you've saved yourself about £800 in dealer labour costs, and the job is done properly. When you have to do it again in 50k miles or so because the clutch springs are rattling again, it will be much easier the second time! Well done. |

Cheers Blackwolf.. It was a very daunting task, but the immense feeling of having done it right is well worth all the agro, banged head and cuts n bruises..
Personal confidence in your abilities is key.. I took the Defender for a decent run tonight.. What a difference a late model clutch n bearing makes..
