United Kingdom 2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 SW Stornoway Grey
Hello Mrpheasant,

It is possible (obviously) to do this without too much of a problem.

The Towing Plug to pick up on is above the Cross Member in the rear off side wheel arch, normally behind the screw on inner plastic 'mud guard' protecting the rear light units (which doesn't do a good enough job).

Remove this cover piece and look where your aiming to get to with your Towing Electrics (7 or 13 Pin) you can then
see the path the wiring loom takes. it crosses the rear chassis and tucks in around the fuel tank.

The real issue is fixing the actual Towing Socket in place, easy on the exposed (drop down) mounting options as you can get to both sides of it, but difficult in this recessed area without being a contortionist. I used a spanner that I 'twisted slightly' to get on the nylock ss nuts that I used.

I am about to change mine installing a 13 Pin System and will I think install Rivnuts to make this easier.

All this is easier if the Fuel Tank is out but that in itself is quite a job, so if you want to site your electrics here
thread them through the hole that's there, attach the socket (in a smart way....not self tapping screws...doesn't feel right) and run the loom back to the LR Plug.

Good Luck. SKIP

As Skip says, "without being a contortionist"...
Luckily, I've got small hands and that was the hardest part of the whole fitment...
