A word of caution.

The main job of your battery set up is to start the engine!

If engine will not start it could prove fatal. If fridge does not work your beer might be warm but that won't kill you.

I tend to ensure that enough charge is left in second battery to start the engine!

If you are always travelling as part of a group you can always get a jump start. If travelling solo in remote areas then preserving the batteries so you can start the engine is vital.

Consider carefully how you are going to use the vehicle. Some means of measuring voltage of both batteries. An audible alarm set at a safe voltage?

Thanks Brendan, Good point.

Do you sell battery monitors? Think I saw a split charge system on your site a few weeks ago when I was looking at the Nolden lights.

@Brendan - thanks for the Waeco detail!! I didn't relaise my fridge had a High/Med/Low setting as is controlled by the menu. Its set to high so was cutting out at 11.7V as you say!!!

Once get battery sorted will drop this down to Low as it runs from a leisure battery so doesn't matter!!!

Thanks
James

the lower you take it the fewer cycles you'll get. "Leisure" batteries are not proper deep cycle batteries and still don't like deep discharge. Leaving your fridge cutting out at high voltages will prolong your battery's life at the expense of a a bit of run time at the start of the battery's life. Towards the end of it's life in a few years, you'll probably get longer runtimes by sacrificing them now. Depends where your priorities are really.

The OP mentioned an Optima yellow top which is a combined starter/deep cycle or starter/leisure battery whereas the Optima red top is a starter battery.

For a 4x4 running a dual battery system it is a good idea for the second battery to be a combined starter/leisure so you are able to start the engine from the second battery if need be.

Used to run dual yellow tops until one failed suddenly The two 110's were equipped with dual Odyssey batteries. The Odyssey 1500 is roughly the same size as the Yellowtop however with a larger capacity and CCA. Odyssey are combined starter/leisure batteries.

90XS what dual charging system are you running. The IBS system is good. Cheap dual battery monitors are available on eBay or we could probably source a National Luna dual battery monitor for you.
