Mikes 1991 110 200Tdi Defender
I`m new to land rovers, but fancied a change from all the vw`s i`ve had over the years so bought my first defender a couple of weeks ago Very Happy

He`s a 1991 200Tdi Station Wagen and i`m really enjoying it. He`s on Irish plates at the moment, but just getting the re-registering sorted. Just sorting a few bits and pieces out to get it running tip top - bit of wiring, sticky linkages, etc. Chassis is good and he has a Disco transfer box and rear axle fitted. Gearboxes 3rd synchro is shot, but i`m living with at the moment and double declutching down to 3rd (!) - new gearbox may be on the cards possibly over the next months!

I`ve also renewed the alpine window seals and fitted a new heated windscreen with new seal aswell. Needed new tyres, so i thought i`d take the opportunity to stick some new modular wheels on there too Smile

Got some roof bars to cart my boards and stuff around also - looking forward to some off roading and camping over the next few months!

Ordered some repair pieces for the front doors as the bottoms are not too good, so should be tackling that on friday afternoon (weather dependant!)

Anyway, here`s some pics from tonight with new wheels fitted Cool

Mike

Thanks guys Very Happy - i`ll stick some pics of the door repairs up later this week - you might not say lovely when you see the bottoms of them currently! (although they're not too bad to be honest!)

Got round to having a go at fixing the passenger door on friday. Reasonably pleased, but will finish it all off better when i have more time!

I was going to go for MOT saturday morning but had to cancel as some lights weren`t working after i`d fiddled with the wiring.

After taking a closer look at the wiring, i spent a good chunk of the weekend ripping out a pretty large amount of chock blocks, bullet connectors, trailer wire and 25 years of diy wiring!

Anyway, here`s the pics of the door and one of the removed wiring (!) -

Good work Mike.....getting stuck into all those jobs I never got round too Whistle
SP4x4 have door skins at a decent price if you wanted to change them

I looked at the wiring a good few times and just couldn't face into tackling it ....even tho it annoyed me as it was, everything worked so I left well enough alone.....

Fantastic Thumbs Up

I'm still undecided on whether to repair my middle row doors or replace them, they are quite crusty!

Out of interest where did you get the replacement loom from?

My front wings have been "got at" by the Environment Agency in the past and I'd rather replace it back to standard! Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Yes - i think its new car syndrome, where you have to sort all the little niggles when you get it Smile

The original loom was all there still in place so i didn`t need a new one - it was just bypassed in various places!

To get it uk registered, i have to get an mot, which i took it for today - very nearly passed straight through! Found a very small hole in the chassis near the rear anti rollbar. Not a problem at all apart form the fuel tank is right next to it. Typically, i (unusually for me!) have a nearly full tank! So i`m going to have to spent the week running it down so i can remove it without fuel spilling everywhere.

I had a good look under it while it was up in the air and the chassis is in very good condition otherwise which is great Very Happy

So thats what i`ll be doing next sunday i think!

Here we go - managed to sort the chassis repair out last weekend. Hardest part was getting the fuel tank out. The rear crossmember had been fitted with a couple of studs tack welded in place to bolt the fuel tank in with, but one of them had broken loose with no access to the head! Had to hacksaw through the nut as it was rusted to the stud!

There were 3 connectors on the fuel tank sender - but no wire to the red terminal - anyone know whats that for? You can also see the fuel pipe has been cut and bent in the past, but i managed to get a normal fuel hose connected back with no leaks.

The chassis welding could have been a little neater, but at least i`ve cut out the rust and its fully welded strongly in place. While the tank was out, i painted all the chassis with some chassis truck paint so its all looking pretty good under there now.

Went back for the mot on monday and passed no probs Smile So import docs sent over to DVLA and hopefully get some uk plates soon!

I`ve been instructed i need to clean the seats(!), so have been taking off all the covers and sticking them in the washing machine. They`ve come up pretty good actually, but no pics as of yet. I must`ve removed about a million staples!

Pics -

Also - just wanted to say - i knew exactly what i was on this car when i bought it and Nidge was very good at going through what the niggles were etc! Nothing was hidden from me and i knew that the chassis might need some attention around that area! - i did attack it quite hard around that area with the screwdriver!! The rest is absolutely A1 condition! Very Happy (Which i`m very pleased about!)

Off camping this weekend, so looking forward to that!
