How much slack in the rear drive flanges is acceptable?
I seem to be on a constant quest to reduce the slack in my 110s drivetrain.

How much slack is acceptable in the rear drive flanges?

Here's what I have now even though I changed the flanges about 10k miles ago

The first vid is to much play. Ideally there is no play what so ever as a little play will result in major movement in very little time! The second video you see the diff play which is absolutely fine.

If you have this kind of play after 10k you might wanna go a little easy on the left/right foot action. Another solution would be switching to HD halfshafts and flanges which are way less prone to play.

The HD flanges are indeed stronger, but I personally like these being a weak point. Hopefully you'll strip a flange before you break a half shaft / CV when off-road.

If you have proper lockers and HD half shafts etc though, you'd probably be safe with the HD flanges!

But yes, first vid is a little more play than you'd expect for a recent job. Were your replaced items OEM and did you slather them in plenty and plenty of grease?

EDIT:

As to diff play, that's far less than mine Laughing Whistle

The replacements were not genuine and had a small amount of slack in them from the start, but well greased. I think I'll try some Ashcroft HD flanges and hopefully also get a much better fit to begin with. Ideally I'd like to fit some half shafts with integral flanges .. But which ones?

(and yes, I am fairly heavy footed which isn't going to be helping much! Whistle) 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

I'd personally get some OEM flanges and grease them up.

The only integrated option I think are the old OEM items. Dont think there's any aftermarket.
