Altitude Sickness?
I'm away with uni (geology) mapping some of the Alps for a month or so at the moment, hence not been on here much recently....

Anyway we're at between 2000 and 2500m here, (and hence air pressure down to 0.75 of sea level, or so.) it's also pretty cold over night.

Anyway when first starting in the morning or returning to the car at the end of the day, it's very white smokey on cold startup and until warm. Particularly in low gears on anti-stall and when in low range (lots of slow bumpy steep tracks here). Also sounds pretty 'pinky' / 'diesel-knocky' when first moving away.

Runs pretty well when up to temp, other than being a little down on power due to lower O2 pressure. And also starts fine when warm. A little white smoke when climbing slow hills (ie <5mph, low range)

I know white smoke is usually unburnt fuel, and you can smell it a little inside the car too. Is this just typical for such high altitude?

2.4, EGR blanked and Alive remap with EGR disabled. Otherwise runs very sweetly when last in the UK, and over the journey here. Cheers, David

I was up to 4,300 mt. and no major problems with smoke despite the slopes or temperature. Only a normal lost of power due the altitude.
I have a BAS remap with EGR dissable.

Temperatures between -10 to 20°C

2,000 - 2,500 should not be a big deal for the Defender

I ve drove a landcrusier to 5400 meters (17550 feet) with no real problems ,power was down but nothing that did hinder us

I dropped Gary a PM to see if he had any ideas, as he definitely knows his stuff! Sounds like an underlying problem to me, maybe shown up by the conditions? Big Cry Cheers, David

Symptoms you describe would lead me to check the MAF and air filter though I get the same smoking up here in the winter time when it is cold. The tuners tweak the OEM fuel file including the fuelling curves to take account of the altitudes as they are sold world wide. If you have a scan tool or an ultragauge check the flow from the MAF sensor and post up the reading at tick over and at 2000 rpm. Also check the air filter is not blocked. If the MAF fails then the EMS uses stored values at a given RPM / Load range which does not take into account barometric pressure and would lead to over fuelling giving the symptoms you describe.
