...an increase of Defenders, as the sun sets on a legend. | |
I've had my Puma 110 XS for about a year now. It was very tidy when I bought it and having spent time & money on it, the result is quite a head-turner (if I do say so myself - which I don't often, but passers-by quite often do!).
In this past year however, it has become something of a local celebrity (I know that sounds a bit pompous, but I'm regularly surprised with people stopping me and commenting and relaying their own stories / memories of Land Rovers). In parallel, the number of Defenders in my local town (a small & very English market town) has grown hugely. Granted we live on the edge of the countryside with many local farms, but these are not working Defenders that are cropping up. Mainly Puma's and late & tidy TD5's that are extremely well cared for indeed, sitting proudly in town or on the school run.
I can't help thinking that the run-out year has made people sit up and look at our beloved & humble Defender in a whole new light. With the Puma engine versions making the Defender a viable daily driver, the likes of Twisted (other tuners also available!) producing jaw-dropping variations and the curtain call from Land Rover bringing with it final limited editions and large media coverage - the public seemed have found renewed love for the unassuming plucky Brit that has escorted royalty and rural folk alike.
As a life-long Landy fan, I'm enjoying the increased numbers of Defenders on the roads, but with a slight lump in the throat as 2015 ticks away and takes with it a legend. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My first job involved driving from Southampton to Wick in a 300TDI (twice)
The experience of 3000 miles in a Defender has never left me (for many reasons!)
