1.6mm is in UK. Minimum tread depth of 3mm in France. It varies! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I just had two tyres swapped out on my company car unecessarily as their belief was 3mm. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! The tread wear indicators are usually set at 2mm, the Legal limit In the UK is 1.6mm at three quarters of the width of the tyre which must include the centre band. 2006 TD5110 station wagon

I find the thought of only having 3mm of tread quite terrifying. Mine come off before they get down to 8mm.

agree with blackwolf, 3mm is almost bald!!
I've now got 30k miles on the BFG KM2's and still have 11mm tread all round. If you're looking at 2nd hand tyres with only 2 or 3mm left they must have done some serious mileage... |

I'm probably going to state the obvious here, but thread wear is not the only factor to consider when buying 2nd hand tyres.
I am about to replace my 5 tyres (that I bought a year ago) at once with brand new tyres because they're more than 10 years old, with small cracks and they cannot be properly balanced because they are not round, and yet they have fairly deep threads remaining... |

I've heard people claiming 100k on bf tyres. I did 36k on km2 and was at 12mm.

I've also had 85k out of a set of KM1s and they still had 4-5mm left.
If theOP is looking at a set with 2-3mm that would suggest very high miles on em. |

The last set of BFG muds (original style) from my Disco2 came off after a genuine 100,000 miles and had 6mm remaining. The KM2s on my Defender have now done 68,000 miles and have approx 10mm remaining.
My impression is that KM2s are a softer compound than the originals and wear slightly quicker. |

Looking at 10mm, they start life at 13mm right? Seems reasonable, except for the white lettering ...is it removable without excessive damage to skin or tire?

Me too, I don't think I'd ever let a set of tyres get down to anywhere near 3mm, especially if the wife's driving (!) I tend to swap them at around 6/7 mm - which is normally around 50% worn, then you can normally get a few quid for them and put that towards a new set. I don't do many miles in my 90 so tyres will last ages anyway, so they'll only wear at around 1mm per year, so after 6 years they're ready for a change anyway. |
