Maggiolina vs James Baroud hard shell roof tents
I have been considering one of these for the last few months, I already have an Oz Tent RV4 with sides. Whilst the Oz Tent is great for more "formal" camping, especially in the UK, I think (am I wrong) that the hard shell roof tent would be better for impromptue overnight stops or wild camping - you can " Gerroff moi land " a bit quicker?

Any views on which is best, from what reviews I've seen, the James Baroud seems to come out on top, however it is 1.4 m wide as opposed to 1.3 for the Maggiiolina and may not fit inside my LR expedition roof rack.

Any views, or experience of either?

Ask Steve "BP Man" as he has just changed from a Maggi to a JB,,

Just looked at their on line brochure and prefer the closed look of the Magg. However an immediate advantage of the JB over the Magg seems to be the droppable sides for more light/ventilation. If you're planning camping in hot locations that has to be an advantage?

Also it is wind resistant to 120kmh, although the Defender might tip over before the wind gets that fast Rolling with laughter Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

Did you consider a Columbus? I'm just back from a trip to Italy, every day at another place. Setting up camp is just a matter of a few minutes. The Columbus gives you more head room at one end, and ventilation is also very good.

Had my Maggi for about 9 years. Can't fault it. Every year it must be erected and used about 40 times, as we move on every day whilst on holiday. I noticed the JB had more doors/openings, but to me that's more drafts, more chance of leaks, and a less rigid structure.

Ours had been used in snow, and in the desert

I can't see much difference .. The jb is a little wider, the matteress a little deeper, the maggi a little longer

I had an air top, sold it to TJ Tim , I thought the standard plastic maggi clips were rubbish, so a mate made stainless ones
The jb has better clips as standard

One thing the jb has is a solar panel powered roof vent, nice idea but not really essential

I believe Devon 4x4 now rent jb's, might be worth a go?

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the replies. Landy Andy, I think your photos may have answered two of my concerns, Is that an LR expedition rack you have yours on? If so is there much space left for anything else up there? I wondered how you could shelter the doorway so as not to get soaked when getting in if it's chucking it down with rain as is normal in the UK, does your awning go down the sides as well to protect against our horizontal rain?
Also, if you have to pack away when wet does the bedding etc inside get damp?

Thanks,

Chris 2010 Defender 110 Station Wagon, Santorini Black.

The jb's have a small lip over the doors and window

I took my maggi to chamonix last year, massive storm with no issues

I also took the maggi to the Arctic, no problems camping at -38c

we had both the maggi and columbus.
Between the 2: definitly columbus. that's really 1-2-3-sleep or 1-2-3-depart
Benefit of the maggi: Strong enough to store something on it
