It's basically the same engine, same sort of perfomance and economy. Marginally smoother. They only changed it for emissions reasons.
The Clutch has been revised several times, but it's the same clutch as the 2.4, the gearbox is also the same as the 2.4 but you can get the adaptor shaft modification from Ashcroft.
Nothing really wrong with ABS or Traction control, ABS makes it safer on the road and traction control helps out off road. TC isn't as good as limited slip diffs or locking diffs but it's better than just ordinary open diffs. Obviously the less it has on it the less there is to go wrong, but the TC and ABS are fairly reliable in service. XS's do come with air con, which is nice in summer. |

All of the ex-RAF ones I have seen in my hunt were without A/C, so you may be out of luck there.
M '07 2.4 is base spec but with A/C but they seem few and far between. To echo ZSD-PUMA, it makes summer much more pleasant and also helps to keep it dry inside during the damp winter. For me it was an essential. I also haven't heard of many ABS/TC-equipped Defenders giving masses of trouble. |
