Stability control
Is there anyone else really getting pi##ed off with there stability control every time I go to have a bit of fun or go over a speed bump or rough ground it kicks in and pulls the car back it is far to sensitive for my liking all I ever hear is the abs rattling away

I do think it's a bit sensitive, the rebound on speed bumps makes the DSC graunch on my 90 but without the warning light coming on.

That said, when it activates during driving, I don't find it intrusive. Not like in the MINI which is a straight engine power cut Shocked  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Over sensitive TC can be a sign that the oil/grease in the swivel hubs need topping up.

The slight extra friction can confuse the ABS sensor.

I had it on mine a few years ago. Topped up with some oil and it solved it.

I think that if your hear the ABS pump kick in but no light, the TC hasn't activated it's just the pump arming ready to activate when needed. Craig Rogers

I was just about to ask about the ABS sensitivity and thought I'd best do a quick search, hence arriving at this thread.

I too find it somewhat "over-eager", activating while going down a bumpy dirt track or taking a sharp bend, the really odd thing though is, sometimes when I hear the ABS modulator chipping in, the radio goes off momentarily at the same time Confused

I've noticed too that the radio screen brightness dips a little bit when I turn on the headlights or hazard flashers, checking the MY02 wiring diagram I found the earth return for all the lights and the ABS pump come back through the same earth header, K108, on the bulkhead, I've cleaned the connector and re-tightened the fixing bolt here but it's not made any difference, I also checked the earth connection from the battery to the chassis rail and gearbox, all nice and secure here.

I'm just wondering if anyone else had seen the same thing and found a solution?

'Jury Rig' an earth of your own from the disconnected earth of the lights only on K108 directly back to the battery and see if it makes any difference. If not it'll be the voltage drop of you switching the lights on. Not unusual persay. How old is the battery? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Cheers for that, it's stopped raining now so I'll give that a try after I've done a few voltage measurements. I was wondering how many earth straps there are between chassis/bulkhead and engine?

I've no idea how old the battery is, I only just recently got this 90, it's just another thing on the ever growing list of bits to attend to.

Sorted Very Happy

Battery voltage was 12.6V after standing overnight, about 10V cranking, then around 14.6V with the engine running so seems reasonable.

With the engine running and lights on, I checked from the battery negative terminal to the K108 terminal on the bulkhead and found around 0.5V between the two Surprised

Checking further, I found there's an earth strap between the chassis and bulkhead at the bottom of the driver footwell, one end was loose and the other end, while tight, was fixed with a bolt going right through the chassis with a painted surface both sides Confused

I cleaned up all the connections and just for good measure, I added an additional earth strap between the chassis point and engine block using the starter motor bolt. A re-check on the voltage drop as above now shows about 10mV Very Happy

A quick test run and I'm happy to say all appears to be sorted, as an added bonus I'm no longer getting the overdrive lamp flashing at me all the time it's not engaged and the ABS / TC doesn't seem as twitchy as before.
