We have a new workshop being built and I wondered if there were a lighting expert on here that could help us out please.
The building will be 18m x 9m with the eaves at 3.3m and the ridge at 4.2m The interior is clad entirely in matt white composite panels. 10% of the roof will be GRP rooflights. I'd like the lighting to be the most efficient to run, presume LED. Which lights do I need, how many and where do they go ? Thank you in anticipation. |

A pair of Nolden at the ceiling, Speakers at the walls, and TruckLites on the floor? That will sort you. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

We have tried LED lighting on our vessels with limited success. For 'emergency and maintained' lighting where they run off batteries in the event of a power failure they are ideal as they outlast conventional ones by miles. To get the same spread and quality of light in a large area you invariably need more as their peripheral light spread isn't as strong.
Standard lights namely flourescents have come a long way. For durability and good lighting we use Aqua Signal 2 foot flourescents part number 1044206201 with Osram Lumilux 18 watt Cool Daylight tubes which are ideal. They are IP67 and designed specifically for the following...... ..........are applicable for a wide range of different areas, e.g. workshops, engine rooms, stores, passage ways etc. If you want cheap go to B&Q. Using the Cool Daylight flourescents in any lamp will improve light quality in any flourescent lamp. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! ^^ Agree with Mal that fluorescent tubes are probably the best choice for efficient larger areas lighting. But personally I don't like the cool/cold white light which I find hard on the eye, so if Matt has a chance to compare the light production of a cold white fluorescent lamp and a warm white version, suggest he looks at both before buying. One thing about fluo tubes, when you use them in cold environments, like in the winter for outside lighting, their light production is lower than at positive temps. But that does not seem a problem here as Matt is looking for heating solutions too.
Everywhere I need fluo tubes I invariably use the warmest white that exists, color code 827. Much more pleasant on the eye I think. I have a whole supply of those lying around. I in no way claim to be a lighting expert but I do work in a workshop with no windows... We have 4 rows of florescent tubes on chains hung from the ceiling which combined with the GRP roof lights as you have said above make a very good spread of light and they are very reliable.
I can get their specs from my boss on Tuesday and then let you know? Or better yet get the specs sorted then you can come over and see first hand. Also need to pop over and see you one evening next week if your around? Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

As Eric stated the Cool Daylight can be hard on the eye due primarily to the bright appearance of the light in comparison to normal flourescents. Does an 18 watt Cool Daylight one give the 'appearance' of giving more light or does it actually give more output in comparison to a normal 18 watt flourescent?
Not sure and probably best left well alone as we've been here before.....another time another thread... Nevertheless if you are doing intricate work on your benches the cool daylight are better I think. We used LED panel ceiling lights in the Duty Free Shop which were excellent and delivered over 5000 lumens per panel but at £320:00 per panel by the time the surround was fabricated, where do you draw the line? LED lighting in certain applications are not advanced enough yet to make them affordable unfortunately. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Most manufacturers have lighting engineers who will come out and do calculations for you.I generally use JCC Lighting or Dextra Lighting. They will do designs on computer and give drawings and lux levels.Just done a vet surgery including consult room ,reception and theatre.Replaced fluorescents with led lights. No comparison. That will also calculate payback time over the running cost of fluorescents .In the vets case t it was within 2 years a worthwhile case. Also do a lot in warehousing and led lowbays are now much better and cheaper to run than alternatives also the maintenance costs, reduced cabling also.
Speak to your local electrical wholesaler they should be able to contact manufacturers and even perhaps show you some examples installed in jobs already done.Maufacturers specifications free so yule got nothing to loose. |

Hello Go Beyond
I would look at LED, and test in situ a sample light from a good supplier, and prove the light output. These round lights are Apollo Orbit LED Surface mounted units, with a slim profile at 108mm 38.5W 4000K / 4400 Lumens (very good daylight type output) we fitted dimming units (£160+VAT) so a standard (on-off) unit will be less expensive. http://www.apollolighting.co.uk/products/L...ure%20LED/ Defiantly get advice from either a good supplier or lighting designer, looking at your workshop plans to advise on quantity / location. To give you an idea we fitted 4 in this boardroom (plus the feature LED light over the table), room measures 6M x 8M maximum height of ceiling 3.25M, these lights were placed at around 2.5 -3.0 M centres Good Luck Click image to enlarge SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

Whatever you do don't get cheap LEDs.
We've just replaced a load of cheap and nasty LEDs with less cheap (though actually lower cost) fluorescent flood lights in our farm workshop. Lumens per watt is very similar, not that electricity is very expensive for us anyway as we're generating 24/7. |
