TD5 Rattle
Hi All,

Have an annoying rattle that's been playing on my mind. My intention this weekend is to try and locate it, but I thought I may as well us the time to ask on here as well!

On idle, she's nice and rattle free, on throttle lift off and over run, she's quiet. But whilst accelerating, I have an annoying rattle! I dont know if it's always been there or not, but for some reason it's all I'm picking up now.

I'm assuming it's engine based. Not checked props or anything, but it's not the same sound of my previous experience of failing/failed props etc, so I'm sure it's engine/gearbox based.

I have a quick video I shot when I pulled up this morning, but you cant here it until about half way through and you need to listen carefully, but it is there.

I think it does it up the rev range, but obviously, there's plenty more noises which hide this about 20-30mph etc.

Video Here:

Any thoughts appreciated.

I did do the Washers and seals 6 weeks or so ago now! Just dont another quick service to.

Cheers all.

I had a similar issue with mine and I found a heat shield which only rattled at odd times, bit like yours. I think it's around the exhaust area, possibly near the gearbox. I'll have a look under see if it jogs my memory.

On a side note ... I have just fitted a full Griffin system. But everything seems tight!

Is is the turbo heat shield? If so, that's solid!

Think that's the only heat shield on there?

Cheers for thought though Smile

To be honest I can't make out the rattle but that doesn't mean there isn't one. I've had various rattles over the years such as the heat shield on top of the turbo,
one of the wing stiffners(found attached to the inner wing in the proximity of the plastic intakes nearer the bulkhead, you can see them with the bonnet open)
bonnet rattling in the plastic bushes in the hinges.
There's plenty of scope for the Defender to rattle when standing still, don't think about the ratlles when you're actually moving!

Right, I've had a look and it's all coming back to me now. Under the passenger door side , inside the chassis rail there's a gearbox/transfer box mounting which has a small heat shield on it, presumably to protect the bush/mount as it's near where the exhaust kicks out away from the gear box. That was rattling on mine. Made a nasty tinny sound at various times. I put a kink in it and it's been fine ever since. Might not be your problem as it was hard to make out from your video but worth having a look.

I'll try again later to get it on tape!

The best way is having the vent flap open and putting the camera (phone) in the dash. I hear it more with vent open, but the wind noise muffles the phones microphone.

When stationary it's fine. Only when in motion and with the foot on the gas. Lift off and it's gone.

Will check out all suggestions though!

@ 13 secs is about the only spot the phone picked it up! Did it throughout that clip, but to much exhaust noise coming through the phone.

As mentioned above I had rattle from transfer box mount heat shield, just needed a bend adding. Also had many rattles from exhaust manifold heat shield, so I binned it.

Hmm... I'll check them all out!

It's definitely only when my foot is on the accelerator though. Either accelerating or maintaining speed. Let off and it goes. But also does it stationary. Again foot on accelerator. Rev it up it rattles. Foot off, it's gone.

My old work 110 had a rattle a bit like that, think it was something in the flexi joint on the exhaust downpipe.

Your's doesn't have an X-eng handbrake does it? mine rattles if you walk past the thing, let along have the engine running! Laughing

The plastic 'hatch' on the engine cover rattled remarkably loudly on my last Td5 - a bit of bubble wrap under it 'fixed' it.
